5 weeks after surgery..... What should I be eating

Recommended Posts

This question is best directed to your nutritionist. The reason for this is that it doesn't take but 5 minutes of reading these forums to see how extremely varied surgeons' plans for food reintroduction can be. My surgeon's was a more accelerated one - week 1: Clear Liquids, week 2: full liquids, week 3: purees, week 4: soft foods, etc., but I've seen others have these stages introduced much further down the line. Regardless of what stage you are on, Protein and Fluid intake should be your top priorities, and carbs and sugars should be as limited as possible. That one is pretty universal across the board. :)

I haven't had my surgery yet. That said, I've seen and heard a lot about 'head' hunger... are you really hungry, or is your mind hungry? Also, I've seen people talk about remembering not to drink anything 30 min before, or after, you eat. You don't want to wash down the food you do put in your stomach, especially right now while it's all soft/liquid to begin with.

Protein first. Veggies second. Fruit/bread/rice/sugar/etc last, or not at all at the beginning.

Are you getting all the Protein your doctor is recommending, and still squeezing in all the Water he wants as well?

Ugh. I fear the 'head' hunger after my surgery... I have decided that taking up a new hobby might help get my mind off the food... just haven't figured out what that hobby will be ROFLMAO.

I'm trying my best to get the Protein in and liquid some days are easier then others... I've Been making myself drink these Protein drinks after so many it's just uhh before surguary they was fine now after its like they almost make me gag kinda weird.... I just don't want to eat to much or not right foods I stay away from sugars unless in my Protein or in fruit... I need a hobby waiting for weather here in Ohio to warm up to walk with the baby.... I'm thankful I got the surgery but it's been difficult

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
