Not even 6 weeks post op-Gaining weight?

Tuesday will be 6 weeks post op and I am GAINING! Please explain how this is possible and don't suggest that this is a stall. I was on a stall from 2/5 to 2/21 when I didn't even lose a pound. But at least I didn't gain. Now I am gaining. To give you some additional insight here are my statistics.

DAY Weight Calories Protein

Last Sunday 289 495 54

Monday 289 638 84

Tuesday 287 491 56

Wednesday 289 472 60

Thursday 289 466 59

Friday 289 457 55

Saturday 293 411 43

Sunday 293 haven't eaten yet

For my friends reading this remember I am the one whose Dr told me to reduce my protein from 60 down to 41. As you can see I didn't really do that. Is that why I am gaining?

Your calories are way low, and your sodium intake is quite high. Anything that comes out of a can or a package (soup, lunch meat, even cheese) is high in sodium. More than likely, you are retaining fl

Sorry to be indelicate but is there any chance you are constipated? People can hold onto 5 -10 lbs of poop easily, and if you aren't going regularly, it will show up on the scale as a gain.

First, someone who is gifted as a surgeon may not be similarly gifted in nutrition. If you are having pain when you eat, you need to tell your doctor. Now. Please.

I used milk of magnesia early on and it always helped, even though I'd still only go every 3 days and it was rock hard. But I eventually found insoluble Fiber to be the key for me. (The fiber gummies, Benefiber, etc are all soluble fiber and didn't do a thing to help) I add apple pectin fiber and ground flax seed to my Greek yogurt and Protein smoothies every day. I also eat All bran Cereal and Kashi Go Lean cereal. The result has been daily, soft BMs.

Other people have reported good results with smooth move tea and prune juice. And don't forget to drink lots of water!

Went right out and got MOM and Dulcolax too. Took the MOM let's see what happens!

2goldengirl I did tell the Dr when I saw him for my 1 month on Feb 26th and he said that the pain was my signal that I was full or I was eating to fast. As you see I am not a fast eater and have not been for many many years. I told him I am only able to eat 1 to 2 oz of food and taking tiny bites and eating slowly. He said that is how it should be. I asked him how big my tummy was now He said he used a 37 fr whatever that is and that it is about the size of a man's thumb all the way down. So he is well aware of all this pain.

For those taking the Milk of Magnesia + Dulcolax, Do you take them at the same time? I too the MOM around 4 pm yesterday and nothing. Took the Dulcolax at around 7 pm and still nothing has happened. Did manage last night to get down about a 1/2 a cup of crumbled turkey meat before the pain started.

@@ssflbelle - I would think one or the other, not both at the same time. make sure you are still getting in the Water.

Where in Florida are you?

The MOM usually worked overnight for me. It wasn't an instant effect. Took it at bedtime and pooped in the morning.

Yesterday was the first day in over 3 weeks I was able to eat food and not get that terrible under the left breast pain. It felt good to eat and not have pain within 3 to 4 bites. I had my first piece of chicken in over 6 weeks and I enjoyed every tiny bite of the 3 oz piece I had. I just hope my ability to eat and drink more Water keeps improving. The last 3 weeks were really getting to me and making me wonder "What did I do to myself" Now I feel more normal emotional and look forward to the road ahead. Thanks everyone for your support through this difficult patch this past weekend.

On the day you ate 84g of Protein the scale went down, so I would up it. The guide for protein I was given was your weight in kg x 0.8

@ssflbelle My surgeon took me off Protein shakes now that I am on real food I am supposed to get my Proteins there. He said the shakes/drinks are just rich with calories, but when you are on the liquid diet its the only way to get you protein fast. Your proteins do sound low as other's have commented. Make sure that your proteins are lean ones and watch the sodium as it will make you retain fluids. I would also substitute maybe a hard boiled egg for Breakfast rather than so many hot chocolate drinks. Keep it up, don't get discouraged! It's just your body's way of saying it thinks you are starving to death and is trying to hold on to the weight.

I lost 20lbs in the first 2 weeks after surgery, then gained 17lbs at 2-3 weeks post-op, and then lost it again 5 days later. Apparently Water retention and my body just going into some shock from the surgery. This was while I was still on the liquid only diet. I have started losing again, but it's slower than I had expected based on what I've seen in other people. Your body might be in a little bit of shock, too.

I think you should try to get most of your Protein from actual food, but sometimes that's problematic when you can't eat enough at one time to make a significant dent. That said, not all shakes are full of sugar, carbs and calories. I don't buy premixed (usually more expensive) but I know you can find 0 carb or low carb protein powders. Some, if flavored, may have a few carbs, but not many. I use one of the flavored Syntrax powders, which is at 100 calories and (from memory) maybe 7g carbs and 23g protein. The unflavored ones have 0 carbs.

Do you like yogurt? The plain, unflavored Fage Greek yogurt is made with only milk and yeast cultures--no additives--and has 23g protein (yes, as much as my protein powder!) and 9g carbs (because of the natural lactose in dairy). That's a ton of protein from a "real" food. Naturally, flavored versions have different counts. It is the highest protein Greek yogurt I've found. You can flavor it with fruit, sweeteners (if wanted) yourself and know you aren't adding in weird chemicals.

Amanda,

How are you doing today? Any update?

Amanda,

How are you doing today? Any update?

Thanks Annek for asking. I am still trying to get in the higher amounts of Protein and more Water. Some days I can do it other days I have trouble with some foods. The Dr said I can have oatmeal and vegs. Like this morning I use 1/2 cups of oatmeal with 1 cup of protein silk and 3 teaspoons of Syntrax vanilla Protein powder. Mixed it all together and microwaved it for 2 1/2 minutes. Had 4 small bits and couldn't eat any more. There was so much left over I can have for Breakfast for 2 more days. Next time I am going to have to use just 1/4 of a cup oatmeal. Late afternoon I didn't feel I could eat anything so I had a shake. Tonight after 3 oz of Turkey I was able to get about 1 1/2 tablespoons of cauliflower.

I haven't weighed myself since Tuesday but took some more MOM today to help things along. I am trying to only weigh in on Tuesdays.

Been keeping myself busy with bike riding. Am up to 4.65 miles as of yesterday despite the 22 mph winds. Am also designing and assembling baby boy favors for an office baby shower. Plus have been working on my sequin art. Keeping my hands busy is something I have done for years but even more so now. I received 2 bathing suits today but will have to work on doing something for the girls as there is just not enough support despite the fact that they both have molded cups. I still have some time before I will be able to wear them as I still can't lift my legs high enough to get out of the pool. However that day will be coming soon I hope.

Songsmith I do eat yogurt that has 12 grams of protein and have no problems with getting them down.

Katladee The hot chocolate is protein and takes the place of coffee which I can't have yet. On the 2 days I work I do have protein food for breakfast and no hot chocolate.

Stephanie I think your right the same thing kind of happened to me too. The first 2 weeks I was great and than things went down hill a bit. However I feel like things are getting better each day.

Perforce Your right it did! That is why I need not to listen to the Dr and keep my protein between 60 to 80 grams daily not 41 as he said.
