Gastric Sleeve insurance coverage in TX?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm in Houston TX and looking for an insurance that will cover my sleeve. Which insurance company did you go through or did most everyone in TX have to self pay? Can't wait to hear from you!

Hi there! Quick question, what year did you have your sleeve done? I just called blue cross blue shield and they said they do not cover weight loss surgery... I've called several others and they say the same. I don't get it are almost everyone in texas paying for it themselves?

I have UHC through my employer and it does cover weightloss surgery. I did not use insurance though as I didn't want to wait through the six months supervised diet. My cash pay price in the Dallas/Ft Worth area was less than 5K. Best decision of my life!

Hi I'm also in Houston. I had BCBS through my employer. I had already met my out of pocket for the year so I did not have to pay any additional amount for the surgery. My surgery was Oct 2015. I know employers can choose to include or exclude bariatric surgery. When purchasing insurance I'm guessing that they don't want you to just pay a couple of premiums and get the surgery so maybe they require a time limit before they will cover it.

Thank you for all your replies! Yeah i guess my first road block is insurance coverage. I work as a nanny so i am self insured and there aren't any policies i can buy that will cover it unless next year things change or i begin working with a company. I deff want & need the surgery and know i wouldn't regret it either.

Question, how were you able to get it less than 5k? I was told at the clinic in houston that it was 13k.. Please share!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
