Not Eating Well (6 weeks - post op)

I am almost 6 weeks, not really had much trouble. I just can't eat very much, at first I wasn't worried. I saw a couple of posts that said enjoy the honeymoon phase, it won't last too long. So I have been eating 500-600 calories a day. I can eat boiled eggs, yoghurt, stew, mashed potato, fish pie. However, this last few days I just don't want to try and eat the food. It feels like I have so much restriction.

I had to force every bite for the first 4 months. I was just so full all the time. 2-3 tablespoons and that was it. Eating and drinking was such a chore. But you just gotta do it and it will get better. By 6 months I was enjoying every bite. Believe me, you'll wish you had that kind of restriction a few years down the line.

You need to measure your food and eat on a schedule in the early weeks/months. It's the only way you can make sure you are getting enough calories and Protein. You won't feel "hunger" and you'll associate food with discomfort, but you need to fuel your body! Are you doing any exercise yet? If/when you start to introduce intense exercise, you'll probably want to be up over 800 calories a day.

Thank you so much for your responses, at least you are giving me comfort that this is normal. Some of the posts are about people who feel no restriction and are hungry and this makes me feel there might be something wrong with me, but I guess everyone is different.

I think anyone who experience "hunger" as early out as you are is either talking about head hunger or acid. I didn't start feeling real, physical hunger until closer to 6 months post-op.

Regarding hunger - I think there's a difference. I do not feel 'hunger,' as in a desire to eat. However, there are times my stomach is empty and wants to be fed. The prob is, I don't want the food - it's a strange predicament!

I am just over 3 months (hit Tuesday). The first two months, I hated food. It was a chore to eat. Then it got better. The last week it has been bad again - I simply have no desire to even put food in my mouth, even when my stomach is empty. So I am really having to focus on a schedule of intake and on consuming Protein first before I cannot eat. It is a challenge, but we HAVE to get the calories/protein in, want it or not. It's for our health. Just pace yourself and keep at it!

Thanks so much for posting this. I am 6 weeks out and feeling the exact same way. It is shocking how little I can eat. I am glad I am not the only one!

I just found this site tonight and boy am I glad. Having much the same problems as some of you are. food really tastes bad. Can hardly get it down and when I do two bites and I feel like my stomach is full. Water is so bad. Really have to work at it to get anything down. Not eating and drinking enough. No weight loss in 4 weeks. I am sorry others are having these problems, but glad to know I am not the only one. My dr. told me to eat and drink and it would get better and the weight would come off, but it is very hard to not eat and not loose weight. I will take the advice I heard here and work very hard. Thanks.

Welcome to the site.

It is hard and counterintuitive, but you have got to get in your nutrition in order to lose weight but also to heal from surgery.

Follow your program.

Focus on getting in at least 64 oz of Fluid, every day.

Focus on reaching your Protein target, every day.

Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed.

Exercise when cleared. (Walking is a great way to start.)

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
