Insurance requires 6 months to try to lose some weight

Recommended Posts

FYI, I had the surgery 16 months ago and haven't thrown up once. Most people don't if you're careful not to overeat.

Also, because I was trying to quit smoking, I had only lost 5 pounds during my 3 month weight loss insurance requirement. As long as they see you're making an effort, you should be okay.

I am in the same boat trying to quite smoking and do my 3 month diet for the insurance. How is your smoking now that you are sleeved? DId you start back? Im thinking I can quit just not sure if i can make it stick.

My insurance was 12 months, monthly dr visits (miss or go over 30 days start over), had to lose 5% of total body weight(was 10%), gain or stay the same and you start over, nicotine free for 6 months, and meet age/bmi/comorbidity guidelines, surgeon also had to agree to provide them with yearly status reports for a decade in writing before they would begin the process. Couldn't use any pharmacological aids during the 12 months. ....

I tried for 3-4 years and never could get beyond 6 months. Finally managed to do self pay. Had multiple drs write them that it was a medical necessity etc. Then they wouldn't cover my surgeon prescribed meds post-op. Luckily the johns hopkins social workers helped with the expensive stuff like lovenox.

I'm convinced that they only approve a few people each year solely so they can't be sued for having impossible requirements.

Hi! I have to jump through many hoops as well for my insurance. 6 months of Dr supervised weight loss plan, numerous health scans and bloodwork. But luckily the center that is doing my surgery is willing to walk through each step with me to ensure I meet all the requirements. I wish you the best of luck as well.

I also had a 6 month wait and my insurance required me to lose 5% of my starting weight.

Your boots made me giggle. I have heard of people doing all kinds of things to boost their initial starting weight. Best of luck to you, the waiting period will be over before you know it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
