Reductions before op

Recommended Posts

I got this list of things I have to remove/reduce from my diet from the surgeon. I googled salicylates but don't understand what is bad about them in surgical situations? Also, why is vit E and fish oil etc bad? I'll follow the instructions of course, I'm just wondering.

This is the part of the list I don't get:

HERBAL / HEALTH supplements (They have to be reduced before surgery)

· Arnica – 2 weeks

· Vitamin E – 2 weeks

· Fish Oil (Omega 3) – 1 week

· Gingko Biloba – 2 weeks

· Garlic – 1 week

· Natural foods high in Salicylates: curry, cayenne pepper, ginger, paprika, thyme, cinnamon, dill, oregano, turmeric, liquorice, peppermint, raisins, cherries, cranberries, oranges, prunes, grapes, strawberries, chewing gum, honey, wine, cider, vinegar.

Salicylates reduce your platelets, meaning you won't clot like you're supposed to and have a higher risk of bleeding more than you should.

Not sure about most of the herbals, but a general rule of thumb is that anything that starts with a G is a natural blood thinner (ginkgo, gensing, etc.).

Also, I'm not just spouting off pseudoscience, I'm a student pharmacist.

Ah, I see, that makes sense then. Anyone got any idea about the Vitamin E and the fish oil?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
