Traveling (for a wedding) at 5 months post op, good idea or not ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm in this group to hopefully relate to people my own age (I'm 63....240 lbs. 5'3") Not even sleeved yet (should be January 2016) and have been invited to a wedding of close friends in June. Not sure whether to make plans (airplane reservations, hotel etc....) or not because I don't know what to expect 5 months after surgery. Will a person have graduated to soft foods, and not have to puree everything by then? Just have doubts whether I should put myself through that or not but don't want to hurt my friends feelings by not being there. I've opted NOT to discuss this with anyone except my husband (currently) and will tell my sister soon but not until I see her in ATL later in the week. Haven't even decided on whether to share my announcement to other friends and family........well, at least not yet anyway.

Any and all input will be much appreciated. Thanks and hope you all are having the best week possible under many different circumstances :)

You will be fine at 5 months out. Make plans and enjoy yourself.

I was eating regular foods at 4 1/2 weeks, just not so much, and way less starchy carbs. Enjoy your trip. The fewer people you tell, the better, especially if your crowd is judgemental and unsupportive. Ben Franklin said, "To whom thy secrets thou doest tell, to him thy freedom thou doest sell."

At five days out? Probably not. But at five months? Yeah, you'll be fine. My surgeon's plan had me cleared for regular foods (including lettuce and other raw veggies) at 6 weeks. Some are more conservative, but in any case, you will be well into regular foods by then.

Well, I feel a whole lot better now after hearing all the positive responses. Guess I'll be toasting the happy couple (with a Protein shake of course!!), and possibly in a sleeveless summer dress?......can't even imagine that, but guess it's possible.

Thanks to all !!

I'm 5 months out and I can eat pretty much anything I want, but in smaller amounts. I will be traveling across the US in 3 days (yay!) for a long visit with friends and relatives. I have no worries to bother me; not even the old one: "will I be able to buckle my seat belt on the planes without asking for an extender?" Answer: I will have lots of room to spare! Nothing stops me now from going out and enjoying my new found life! I'll be 65 next month but I feel (and now look) much younger. I made my plane reservation for this trip last March, two months before my sleeve surgery. I knew I'd be smaller but didn't dare to dream I'd be smaller than I've been in 45 years! Go! Enjoy!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
