VGB in 2002 to a RNY on October 28, 2015

Recommended Posts

I'm Kathy. I had a vertical banded gastoplasty in 2002. My high weight was 307 and my lowest was about 230. Over the years I ballooned back up to 269. I found out in May that the mesh used in my surgery had corroded into my stomach and I needed it fixed. My surgeon had retired and no bariatric surgeon in my area would touch it. I found a surgeon in Iowa City at the University of Iowa Hospital that was willing to help me. i had my first visit in June and I was amazed at how much different it was going to be this time. I never saw a NUT before or had a psych eval. With my psych eval I found out alot about my eating habits and I now see a therapist weekly to keep me on track and to get to the bottom of my food addiction. My surgery is scheduled for 10/28/2015 and the plan is a RNY unless there is too much scar tissue, then it will be the sleeve. I'm heading for the "LOSERS BENCH!"

@@kathymtz@yahoo.com Hello Kathy! Congratulations on joining all of us!!! There is a October surgery list that I started in the pre-bariatric forum, I will add your date to it! Also there is a good forum there Anyone having surgery in October? You might check it out! I'm having the RNY October 8th & my pre-op is tomorrow!! Glad you finally found someone to help you out with surgery, they must be a great physician! You did a good job with the band, but I have a girlfriend who had trouble with hers. Best of luck to you!!! Terri

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
