Post surgery restrictions?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask a general question about post surgery restrictions - specifically if you were told not to lift more than 5 pounds for a certain length of time.

I found this restriction in some of the research I've been doing. However, I asked a friend that just had gastric bypass and she wasn't given any restrictions. Sounds like this might be surgeon specific...

We're adopting a newborn in August and I'm shooting for surgery around January. I'm afraid I won't be able to pick up my baby!

I was given restrictions of no bending and no lifting, pushing or pulling greater than 5 lbs for four weeks. Some of my paperwork says six weeks, I think that's excessive. I can understand two weeks, it's tough and it hurts.

I was told no lifting, pushing or pulling anything between 10-15 lbs. for 2 weeks as this may strain muscles trying to heal around port? I did not hear about bending, but it hurts to bend, so I do not have a problem avoiding. The best part was light housekeeping only. Yipeee!

Abdominal surgery of any kind calls for being careful about lifting for at least a few weeks afterward. You don't have to worry about lifting a newborn, though, past the first couple of days. As with anything, the general rule is if it hurts, DON'T DO IT. If you're careful and take things slowly, you'll be fine.

... if it hurts, DON'T DO IT.

This is my surgeon's official stance - works for me!

I appreciate everyone's feedback on this! Thank you!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
