Gain immediately following surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all!! I had RNY on Monday and when I got home yesterday....much to my surprise I had gained 10 lbs!! Boy have I been in a lot of pain and seeing that was pretty disheartening.

Anyone else have this experience? So far so good with everything. I never thought I'd be so happy and excited to tell people I passed gas! lol

Thanks for the insight. ????

After surgery and during the hospital stage, many people gain weight because they fill your body with I.V. fluids. Therefore when you finally arrive home, you will need to lose that weight first before you see any weight loss. Also during the first few weeks after surgery, your body is in a heal mode.

Yes, this is perfectly normal. I gained 13lbs and remember how crappy that made me feel. It is from all the fluids and gas pumped into your body during surgery.

I promise over the next week that will be gone and likely more on top of that.

Congratulations on your surgery. Get well soon!

I was only in the hospital overnight and when they put me on the scale the morning after my surgery and I saw a 9 lb. gain I was mad! Same thing I was told, IV fluids, etc. When my surgeon came in I told him he was in big trouble and then we had a good laugh. Still, I had to lose those 9 lbs. and it freaked me out, both of which were NOT funny

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
