Preparing for consultation

Recommended Posts

I have created a list of questions. I meet two different surgeons in late September so I can choose the best one for me. I have researched all of the procedures and decided the sleeve is the best option for me. I will be self paying and hoping to go the hiatal hernia repair option to decrease my costs since my insurance plan excludes WLS surgery. I keep feeling like there's something more I should do to prepare. Do any if you have suggestions???

My surgeon had a 3 hour seminar we were required to attend. I am so glad I did because I learned so very much. He actually gave the seminar himself. I would look into that, and attend both if applicable and see from there.

I kind of feel like you. I have had my consultation and am in my 3 month 'pre surgery insurance stuff' to lose some weight and get in better shape for surgery. I am about to start trying Protein shakes and see which ones and what recipes I really like. That is something you can start doing. I am also slowly weening off of cokes. Well, I havent had a coke in a week so I guess I have weened off of those. I plan to have surgery in early December and about early November I will start weening off of all caffeine altogether, as that is a requirement from my doctor. I will also really limit my sugar intake. I do not want to be any more miserable than necessary when I do the 2 week pre op diet.

Also, find out what both of their pre and post op diets and requirements are, like a sleep study and an endoscopy.

Good luck!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
