Dehydration after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am so happy to have found this site. Living in the woods and lakes country of northern Michigan, there are no 'in person' support groups!

I had gastric sleeve surgery on March 24, 2015. So far I am down 87 lbs :) but ran into some real difficulty about six weeks after surgery by becomming SERIOUSLY dehydrated, even though I was drinking a minimum of 64 oz. of Water each day. :( This led to disc problems in my lower back and it has taken a loooong time to recover from this pain. I needed far more Fluid than that. I could not DRIVE for about 6 weeks and was on a walker with nurse and therapists each coming three times a week. Did anyone else encounter this?

Now, about 4 1/2 months out, I am walking 1.7 miles 4-5 times per week and recently purchased an exercise chair for weight resistance training on alternate days. Taking in about 70-80 grams of Protein each day, few carbs- about 30-50 gr. , about 85-100 oz of Water each day. Does that sound about right? Have hit a plateau but my body has stabilized and feels stronger. :D :D

I am wondering if I am taking in too many carbs? also, I lost a lot of hair  but it does seem to be starting to come back a bit. Is this due to the shock of surgery?

Are you drinking caffeine or carbonated beverages of any kind? Those two things will absolutely pilfer your body of its Water (I assume you are not drinking alcohol). I think you're actually more likely to get dehydrated when you don't take in carbs than when you do. It seems like you are doing everything right. Be sure you rehydrate after exercise...it is as important as protein! I am struggling with that as we speak.

Everything says that the hair loss happens right about at your stage, and comes quickly back. Your story backs up all the normal predictions and it is very transient.

BTW, I don't know what I wouldn't do for a TC Cherry Pie right about now. I went up to Cherry Festival this summer and made it my last big food event before pre-op. Love the mitten...

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
