24 hour post op misery

Recommended Posts

I felt the same exact way. Walk around as much as you can, and use Gas X. If you are nauseated, ask for a prescription for Zofran.

And I hope you feel better soon. Sending hugs and prayers

I spoke with my surgeon today and he said I can expect this to persist for 3 to 4 (up to 8!!!!) weeks. He recommending adding heating pads to my left shoulder and left upper quadrant (diaphragm area), continue Gas-X strips, continue pain meds (Tylenol with codeine) and to make sure I'm getting enough rest in addition to the walking. Also, if it gets worse, I need to come in for a CT Scan to check for leaks. (I'm not concerned about a leak at this point) Just wanted to update everyone in case anyone else is experiencing the same.

My severe shoulder pains subsided after 1.5 to 2 weeks (somewhere along in there), but I had horrible crampy, gassy pains every time I drank/swallowed anything for like 3-4 weeks. It was heinous and miserable and all I can say is I'm glad I survived, LOL. I think your surgeon is giving you an estimate - everyone is different. You may get lucky and it may go away in a week or you may be stuck with gassy pain for weeks. Heating pad DEFINITELY helped me, I had forgotten about that!!!

Guys I'm hurting. There's horrible cramping, getting in and our of bed is a nightmare and at the moment I'm really regretting my decision.

How long will this last???

you need gas X it will help with the bloat it's the gas they filled you with that hurts and cramping you up, walk walk and use gas x I walked 3 times my first night after surgery I think it helped me heal faster I'm post op 7 days and now I'm just learning to sip instead of gulp my liquids so so hard but it's awesome at the same time!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
