What are these shots after surgery I see people talking about? I have not heard anything from my surgeon about that yet? Any thoughts/advice?

I've gotten 2 anti clotting shots since I've been in the hospital. They're so you don't get a blood clot.

Mine hasn't mentioned getting any shots wither. Does everyone receive them?

I had 10 days of self-administered shots post op..

As mentioned, they were to assist with not clotting.

I just did it at the same time as I took my liquid vitamins and ate my yogurt..

Ahhhh, those were the days...

...*panicking* self...administered...shots....10 of them? I'm getting woozy just thinking about it.

It was really easy...

All you gotta do is stick the needle in til it stops, slowly push the end then rub your belly...

I freaked out at first too...

But don't panic..

It's not bad at all..

And if it is, just get someone else to do it for you..

Except maybe the 'rub your belly' part of it..

Haha I'll hopefully just faint and be passed out through it. I cringe at the sight of needles. When I get blood work they know not to let me see the needle.

I will definitely have to ask next appointment. I do insulin four times a day so what's a few more? Lol. I just had never heard that before. Interesting

Yeah, you're in trouble then..

But remember, not all surgeons and post-op care are the same...

Let them know you don't do needles...

I'm sure they'll sort something out...

It's not that bad it comes in a pre loaded syringe the pharmacy can show u how to do it it's really easy it's very fine needle it's not painful

No shots for me lol....

Just had a pre op class and I do have to do shots. They said it's called lovenox and I have to do one shot a day for seven days. I am on insulin so hopefully it will be similar.

Lovenox is a blood thinner, used to prevent blood clots. Blood clots are a preventable risk factor with WLS. The syringes some preloaded with the proper dose. The needle is very fine, similar to what is used to give insulin. It is a small amount, equal to about 40 units of regular U100 insulin if you are a diabetic. I have to take it for 14 days. Every surgeon is different as to if, and length of time. Hope that helps. Also, it goes in the fat so most people don't even feel it!!

I've noticed a lot of diabetics have to do it, what about people that aren't diabetic?

I had them the 2 days I was in the hospital. I had heparin shots multiple times a day. Between the shots and the blood draws I had 22 separate bruises when I went home.

They asked me in the hospital if I was safe at home. I told them I have 22 big bruises and 6 incisions on my stomach - I'm a whole lot safer at home than I am in here!
