Pre-Op diet, did I screw up, or is it ok?

Recommended Posts

I am day 3 of the pre-op diet, and working VERY hard to stay very strictly on track.

My pre-op diet for the 2 weeks prior to surgery allows me (this is cut and pasted):

Unlimited leafy green vegetables (spinach, lettuce, kale), every day. Add some flavor with balsamic vinegar, lemon juice or any zero calories dressings. Green leafy vegetables may be enjoyed cooked or raw in Soups or salads. You may have as many as you´d like throughout the day, aim for at least 3 cups to control hunger and improve liver functions. You may include tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. Some examples of green leafy vegetables are spinach, romaine lettuce (or any other type), celery, kale, chard, cilantro (coriander), watercress, collards, turnip greens, mustard greens, broccoli, cabbage.

I went to make myself a salad tonight at work, and when I opened my lettuce I saw that it was bad. Ultimately I ended up eating half of an english cucumber, and a decent sized Tomato. Does the wording on my instructions look like I am ok to eat those unlimited as well? Or did I overdo it on those 2?

You should be ok since those are not starchy vegetables

You should be fine! Your livers not going to get fat on a cucumber and tomatoes :) call and ask your surgeon to clarify though if you need to.

I'm on day 11 of my 2 week diet and the first three days are the worst ! All the carbs leaving your body you feel faint and aggravated . But honestly after day five its okay my day three I cracked and had a 1/2of potato salad But was honest called my nutritionist and she informed me it happens but to try to get back on track . Every time I wana break down I just think of having a smooth recovery ! Because I want my liver as small as possible lol Your Good to go ! Good luck you got this !

I actually went through my pre-op paperwork and it says I can have as much of those things (and a few others) as I want. WHEW.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
