Can't keep water down suddenly

Recommended Posts

Hello...I'm 17 days post-op, GB. I woke up at three this morning feeling very sick. My stomach hurt, and it felt like liquid was stuck in my esophagus (I used to have GERD years ago, it was like that) so I got out of bed to sit up. Didn't work, felt that way till five, when I vomited 6 oz. of liquid into a cup. I felt better after a while. I also had two BM's in this time. It's eight now, and I took a few careful sips of Water, then fifteen minutes later, I vomited that up.

I did drink a lot last night. Tried to take all my pills whole/in half, etc...not ground. So I took in a lot of liquid.

Why can I not keep water down? Should I wait and try again?

Have you tried something for reflux?

I do have OTC Prilosec I could take. I hope this isn't serious.

I would call your surgeon ASAP, could be a stricture. I let mine go too long and ended up in the ER severely dehydrated. Better safe than sorry in this case.

This does not sound normal. Nor does it sound like GERD. Some people have an intolerance for cold drinks after surgery. So you might try something warm liquid like tea.

It sounds like it might be a Stenosis/Stricture - a narrowing or constriction of the diameter of a bodily passage or orifice. This is most common in procedures that rearrange your digestive system such as gastric bypass surgery (up to 8% of patients) and duodenal switch surgery and results from a build-up of scar tissue between your intestine and your reduced stomach or at an intestine-to-intestine connection (anastomosis).

The primary symptom is almost always vomiting, and it is usually treated by inserting and inflating a balloon to stretch the connection between the stomach and intestine. GERD and older age increase the risk of strictures.
So this may be something you should consult with your medical staff about.

I am so sorry this is happening. It is Definitely not normal nor should it be reflux.. I would call your doctor immediately, I would guess like others you have something more serious going on.

I hope they figure it out very soon and you are recovering.

I don't know what to think, or say. I took my generic Prilosec, and I'm totally back to normal. I've had iced Water and hot tea so far, no problems. I took my morning meds crushed again. I don't think I'll take them whole except for 2 teeny ones.

Could the fact that I take 15 pills, split, at night, mean something? I took them all split with sips of Water last night. That's a lot of water.

But now I'm worried I have a structure. I see my surgeon Monday morning, I'll talk to him then. Unless of course, I run back into the same problem!

Bless you all for shedding light on this, and caring

If the Prilosec helped I would continue taking that daily until you see the surgeon. I have reflux and this happens to me all the time - but I'm not sleeved yet ????

I can drink and eat, but when I drink, the liquid hurts the center of my gut when it reaches it. I am very concerned, as at almost 3 weeks out, I don't know what if any aches and pains to expect. :(

If I don't take my Prilosec I can't keep anything down. But for sure call your surgeon!

My surgeon has me on an acid reducer for at least six months following surgery. I've been having some acid reflux since surgery so he switch prescriptions to a stronger one and it's helped.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
