Question: when can you eat protein bars?

Recommended Posts

At what stage is it OK to eat Protein Bars? I am a month out and tolerating everything I have eaten so far. I am doing soft foods. I still do one Protein Shake a day and I am tiring of them. I bought some Premier Protein bars today but can't find in my diet documentation any mention of them...

It was ok for me when I went on regular foods, but I did have to wait until three months for the ones with nuts or small bits in them.

OK. I think the ones I bought don't have nuts or chunks of any kind..

My dr said no nuts, seeds or thing of the nature until 6 weeks out. I think it is different for every dr.

Most Protein bars you get have a little bit of a crunch to them these days. But you can find the ones that are just soft protein and they dissolve in your mouth pretty nicely. Pure Protein makes a good one that is low in sugar and 21g of protein. Only 190 calories too. It fills me up pretty good and some days I can't finish it in one sitting. I started eating some of them in soft food stage. They didn't give me any problems.

Agree with above comments. I would think 6 weeks out is fine as you are starting to add back in regular foods. As usual just chew well. Quest also makes great bars that are low in sugar and higher Protein. Premier Protein is another good one. It is good to have a variety of choices!

I would ask the surgeon. He’s going to be familiar with when things are normally healed enough to consume something like that.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
