Waiting for my surgery approval/date

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am a 32 year old mom of 2. I started my bariatric surgery process on February 18th. I have completed all necessary requirements and now I'm waiting for approval and surgery date ????????????. I honestly cannot wait. I've been overweight since I was 5 with bouts of weight loss over the years, but nothing has stuck. This is my last resort. I'm so ready for this life change!!

Hi, @@smrogg! I'm at the same place as you--I have all the pre-op testing done, now I'm just waiting for the insurance approval before I can schedule my surgery. Waiting is very frustrating, isn't it? I've decided to use this time to...

...so that I'm as ready as possible for surgery. I had a couple of weeks where I was having entirely too many "food funerals," so now that I'm getting closer, I'm trying to get my act together.

What procedure are you going to be having?

Hi @lauraellen80. I'm having gastric bypass. I too have been having too many food funerals as you call them ????. I am looking forward to eating right and getting energy!! My weight has held me back from a lot of things and it's only getting worse so something has got to give. I exercise and only a few pounds comes off. My biggest struggle is remembering to eat and when I do eat I'm so hungry I don't make the best choices. I haven't tried any of the shakes yet, bc my dr wants me to wait until I have my date to start. My BMI is 43.0 and my insurance requires a minimum of 40.0 to be eligible, so he doesn't have me on a plan yet. But once I get my date I will be using them! My husband had bypass a year ago in December and has lost 160 pounds. He's a new man! And I'm hoping we can support each other in this journey so that we are both successful at it. Waiting is terrible, although it's only been 2 days since my last dr appt. but I'm hoping to hear soon. The anticipation and worry if not getting approved is killing me. Although I meet all requirements there's always that "what if"

I called my surgeon's office earlier this morning and found out my insurance approval went through, and I'm scheduled for surgery June 15th!

Good luck to you, @smrogg--I hope you hear something soon!

It actually went really quickly--I finished my pre-op testing on 5/11. Then after some confusion with my bloodwork results being sent to my PCP but not the surgeon's office, the surgeon submitted a letter to my insurance this Monday. My mom was breathing down my neck today about at least getting an idea of when my surgery might be (she's going to fly out and stay a few days during/after my surgery... she's a nurse, and I'm a wimpy only child, okay?)... so I called the surgeon's office today, and they said that they got my insurance approval already! I was shocked that it took less than a week!! I have Independence Blue Cross/Keystone Health Plan East, BTW.

That's awesome. I hope mine goes just as quickly. I have Cigna. I keep getting preparing myself for the phone call saying I was denied, but I don't think there is a reason they would deny it. I just have a habit of preparing for the worst. My husband yells at me all the time because I'm so negative. That's great that your mom will be coming to help you and you have a good support system. I bet you will recover quickly. I'm not too worried about the surgery myself. I've had 2 c-sections and I also just had my gall bladder removed in preparation for bypass. They use the same incisions for bypass and I was fine with the gall bladder surgery. It's not so bad, but having help is always a plus. My husband plans to take a few days off from work to help with the kids as I recover.

Ha, yeah, I can empathize on being a pessimist. My philosophy has always been, "Assume that the worst is going to happen; if it does, you were prepared for it, if not, it's a pleasant surprise!" Working on that in therapy now...

I've never had surgery, other than wisdom teeth being taken out about 15 years ago. I've been under general anesthesia a few times in the last year for epidural steroid injections for back and S/I joint pain, but never have been "cut open." At least it's laparoscopic!

Yes! Thank God. I was back to my normal self in about 2 weeks. I have SI joint problems too. It sucks!!! I just had a cortisone shot about two weeks ago and it felt better but now I'm feeling the pain again.

I finally meet with my surgeon tomorrow for the first time and do some labs to begin the process. I don't know how long from meeting with the surgeon until I'm approved and can schedule surgery. I'm hoping for July 29th as that is good for my department at work (no vacations scheduled for the weeks after that). Hoping the meeting tomorrow goes well.

I started this process LAST JULY! It has taken me this long to get approval from my doctor to move forward. I think I needed that time to actually get my head on straight and really take this thing seriously but now I'm ready. Wish me luck.

Good luck! You have been waiting a long time. Hopefully it will be before July 29! I know work can put such stresses on workers due to vacations but you have to do this for yourself. They will just have to handle work without you until you recover.

Met with the surgeon yesterday and was told I can't get the Roux n y because of severe hysterectomy scaring and a large ventral hernia. He is willing to do the sleeve but says even that will be difficult. I heard that people with these scars can do Roux n y if they open them up instead of laparoscopy but I didn't ask him about that because I don't want another open procedure. My recovery from hysterectomy was difficult.

So, now I just wait for insurance approval and then hope for that July 29th surgery date. It coincides with my family coming home for a reunion so I will have plenty of support. :-) Another step in the process completed!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
