Doc says no vitamins?

Recommended Posts

Should I be concerned that my doctor says I don't need any Vitamins? When I asked him today why no mention has been made of vits (surgery on Friday), he said that only bypass patients need vits, not sleeve patients, since sleeves still absorb nutrients from food.

But yet I see so many people who take a ton of vits.

Is my doc crazy?

You should be getting follow up blood work to make sure all your levels are good so I would think his advice is based off from sound past experience. If it makes you uncomfortable still ask him if you can take flinstone complete chewable or the like. I know my program has sleeve patients taking Vitamins, Calcium daily & B12 at different intervals depending upon your levels. I would be concerned as well, check in with the doc or nutritionist in your program.

Some doctor's don't recommend them. Others follow the Vitamin protocol commonly prescribed for bypass patients. Still others don't recommend anything more than a multi. Listen to your body and make sure you are getting routine bloodwork. This will tell you if you need vitamins/supplements added. My doctor is more on the conservative side so I was put on a vitamin/supplement regimen and we have removed/added things based on bloodwork.

Will you have a dietician working with you after surgery? If so, make sure to ask about this. And ditto what all the folks above have said!

My surgeon first said I didn't need any Vitamins, then the nutritionist said same as a bypass. Next appointment surgeon said Vitamins. Since they don't do a lot of sleeves in their practice, I read up on the current recommendations by the American Bariatric Society. I take a chewable multi, Calcium and every few days a B12 and D. I dropped the ironand reduced the D and B12 after my 3 month bloodword (that I ordered through PCP) said my numbers were good. I'm going to continue following current medical advice and my blood work results.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
