Gaining weight at soft food stage

Recommended Posts

Help! Today is day two of the soft food stage for me after 11 days of puréed foods. I am faithful about measuring with the kitchen scale 4 oz of Protein three times a day. I am getting in my 64 oz of Water in each day and am walking two miles a day seven days a week. In three days I've gained almost a pound since finishing the puréed stage. That scares me! I do have one sugar free pudding cup as a treat and one string cheese stick a day.

Should I grow back to one or two Protein Meal Replacement shakes and have one soft food meal a day? I need advice from veteran sleepers.

My surgery was April 13, 2015. I have lost 27 lbs since my pre surgery weigh in. The weight loss is going MUCH slower than I thought it would.

Make that "sleevers". Darn auto correct error.

I had a stall at about two weeks out that lasted two weeks. I think your body is just adjusting to the change. From your post it sounds like you are doing well following your diet progression, so as people always say on this forum, follow the program and you will lose the weight. Keep up the good work and try to be patient with your body.

My body has this strange pattern of losing two pounds, then I go up one pound for a few days and then down two pounds again, crazy but I'm getting used to it.

It is perfectly normal to go through a period of stall or even a slight gain at this point. Keep following the plan. I assure you, you have not come CLOSE to eating enough calories to actually gain real weight. It's just your body adjusting. Stick to the plan. Get in your Protein and Water. Eat the things you are allowed to eat in your current food stage. And be patient.

With all your walking you should increase your calories. Then the scale should start to budge. For 2 miles a day I would increase by 100

My surgery was the week before yours, and I noticed the same thing last week. I went up a little, then the scale didn't budge for several days. It is moving again. I like to weigh every day, and I'm not going to freak out over fluctuations. Especially since my clothes are too big.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
