Why do I sometimes have nausea/vomiting if I drink fluids too fast

Recommended Posts

Had surgery 3/18/15. Have just advanced to soft diet. Struggle to get Protein and fluids in. I get so thirsty but when I drink too fast it comes right back up. I can understand solids doing this eating too fast or too much. I have also experienced this with solids as I learn what my stomach is going to tolerate. But it seems fluids should go down easier by this time postop?? Suggestions or thoughts?

Hello i hv noticed that also i had my sleeve surgery 3-24-15 eating soft. But if i happen to do either eat ot drink too fast it does try to come bk up. I dont know if since our pouch can only take 2-3 oz? Maybe, If you are drinking and some of the food wasnt digested all the way and we put the liquid on top of it. I know for me i will eat or drink a shake and get reflux or rather it comes up in my throat. The doc gave me some med in hosp for nausea promethazine and i take it, sure works good. We are all still learning about our new bodies and how to best nourish ourselves. Just a thought Thnx Sheila

Try keeping hydrated by sipping on fluids all day! This should help with that feeling of being so thirsty, which is causing you to drink too fast. Sip, sip, sip all day and don't wait until you feel thirsty.

The capacity of your stomach right now is just a few ounces... so more than that of anything (food or fluids) is just more than it can take at once. Food/solids stick around longer for the digestion process, but liquids go through pretty fast. You should be able to take sips/swallows pretty often.... just not too much at one time.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
