So Disappointed! My surgery was rescheduled for May 26th. Surgeon doesn't feel like I'm ready because I didn't lose all of the weight they wanted. I lost 10 of the 15 lbs requested. They never told me the weight loss was mandatory only that you cannot gain any weight. Oh well. I won't let this derail me. When I weigh in on May 20th, I will exceed the weight loss goal. I'm not going through this again

I would call them back and demand to speak to the surgeon directly. If they did not tell you the weight loss goal was mandatory then they cannot hold you to that requirement. Explain to him that you will be having the surgery on the originally scheduled date or you will be filing a complaint against him with your insurance as well as in multiple forums online. Doctors don't generally have patients who challenge them and when they do, usually they readily fall in line. You are the patient, not the pinball. Tell them you had planned your life around the original surgery date, rescheduling it is absolutely unacceptable and you will not be going away until they have resolved the situation in a manner you find to be acceptable. A lot of surgeons tend to be bullies because very few people challenge them...be the bigger bully and you will inevitably win.

How long a period of time were you given to lose the weight and did you stick to the plan?

I was given the goal the middle of February. I tried but I guess I will have to try harder

Again, some will always think they know more than the doctors, but the doctors have their reasons. Perhaps they feel your liver is not small enough yet, and don't want to risk knicking it during the surgery. There may be other serious risks involved. Did you ask "Why?"? Maybe they don't feel you have tried hard enough, or are not as committed as you could be. One thing is for sure, you sure sound committed NOW!!!!! All the best to you and good luck on your surgery!

@ On this journey its always better to assume that everything your surgeon tells you is mandatory. Never take anything for granted. That said, I congratulate you for taking it so well and getting it done! You will be a good patient.

ETA: The surgeons pre op diet is not meant as means of torture. It is for your health and well being during surgery. It's called the liver shrinking diet and will shrink your liver for a safer surgery.

I was only two days into the pre-op diet and it honestly was not a bad as I thought it would be. There's no sense in crying (anymore) over spilled milk. I was handed lemons now I'm off to make lemonade.

You have a great attitude. As disappointing as it must be, you're not whining about it or getting pissed off, you are losing the weight! Good luck!

The more weight you lose pre-op the better success with the actual surgery. Also they need your liver to shrink.

There are always setbacks in life. Most of us have turned to food in these times. Now is your chance to show that you are really changing for good. Take the extra few weeks and be the best patient ever.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
