Vitamins - So Many Choices

Recommended Posts

My surgery is 4/13 and I'm so ready to start my new journey. I'd bet that this question has been asked a million times here, but I would really appreciate advice as to the best Vitamins to take after once I'm able to after surgery. Are there specific ones you like/don't like? I'm all about saving money, but I'd rather focus on putting the right vitamins in my body over saving a few dollars.

My nutritionist has given me a requirement list showing the following. I will be required to take a chewable Multi-Vitamin daily like Centrum or Flintstones. I'm also required to take the following daily -

27 mg of Iron

350-500 mcg of B12

3000 IU of D3

1500 mg of Calcium

What do you take or what would you suggest? THANK YOU!

I got a script from my doc for a Vitamin d that you only take once per week. The basic grocery store variety is fine though to take daily. THey are pretty small gel caps.

Iron can also be bought over the counter in your store brand. That is just a standard dosage. Longer gel cap. My doc recommends taking Vitamin C with the Iron to help with absorption. I got my doc to prescribe a chewable.< /p>

For Calcium and my Multivitamin, I take opurity. I buy mine through my docs office, but you can also get them online. Better than the Flinstones for bariatric patients.

I don't take B12 right now, so i don't have a suggestion, but I am pretty sure you should be able to get that from your regular pharmacy as well.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
