Starting out at age 45? How common?

Anyone else out there just getting started in their mid 40s? I keep reading most people doing this are younger.

I was 47.... 50 now. I am so much younger now!!! :)

Lots of people are in the middle decades when they get WLS

I am 51 and I feel better than I did in my 30s! I actually find myself acting and dressing younger than I ever have. I always used to hide myself in too big frumpy clothes.

The doctors that invented and perfected these tools for WLS are my heroes! I feel like they gave me my life back!

Banded at 47, waiting for band to sleeve revision at 53.

45 at surgery now 46. Could not be more happy with my results. life in our 40's friggen amazing. Can't wait to see what the 50's will bring.

I was 54 when I had my surgery--wish I had done it sooner!!!!!

I am 47....or as I like to tell people: 23.5 .....***just happens to be for the 2nd time*** LOL LOL What?? LOL :P :D

I didn't get the surgery at 47 I've :D had it for a few yrs....it is NEVER to late to get healthy ...IMO and hasn't anyone told you? 47 ...er ....23.5 is the new 30 heehee :P

I was 57 when I had WLS in November 2014. My primary care provider told me that WLS is more successful in older adults since we've lived with being overweight and know the hardships of yo yo dieting, most have comorbidities as a result of being overweight and we're more motivated to improve our health.

@@KS123 hello I'm 46 and 6 days post op pls don't feel it's too late you have potentially that many years or more left to live still let it be in the best health and shape u can be so u can enjoy it this is process u must wrap your mind around for some ppl it takes more time then others I think of it this way if u had an illness such a heart problem would it be too late to operate change a lifestyle ? Heck no no matter your age everyone deserves to be the best healthiest they can be how else can u even enjoy life??? Feel free to ask any questions at all I'll be happy to answer anything I can

I had surgery at 40.

I was 64 when I had surgery last year. I think it can improve your life at any age.

My surgeon says her older patients often do much better than the younger ones who are much more likely to resist properly following both her pre op and post op eating requirements, etc. Older people in her experience follow her orders and often do much better. They are more likely motivated by health concerns rather than appearance.

As I read the forums here I often remember what she said. When people say things like "I'm 3 weeks out and sick of purées, can I eat (fill in the blank) " I often wonder how old they are lol.

Don't know whether it's true but my own experience seems to confirm it.

@@KS123 - I was sleeved a month before my 51rst birthday.

Turned 59 last October; had RNY in January. 4.5 weeks out, I've lost 29 lbs, plus 15 pre-op. Tried to have surgery for almost 10 years, but insurance specifically excluded it, year after year. Finally, this past fall, purchased my own policy and came off hubby's work policy - thank you Obamacare, because in Arizona, all Marketplace polices are required to cover WLS. Yes, it costs me monthly premium, plus my out-of-pocket max, but nowhere near what the surgery would cost self-pay, which we couldn't afford. So looking forward to my 60th b-day this coming October now--sure wouldn't have said that before surgery! I expect to be at least 100 lbs lighter than last year!
