A 200 calorie a day Hot Mess

Recommended Posts

Today is day 8 of my 10 pre-op liquid diet. I am down 13lbs. I am supposed to be down 19 lbs for surgery and it is scheduled for Friday (two days from now). I was told that if I bought the Bariatric Advantage Protein powder they guaranteed that I would lose the weight needed during this 10 days. This is the first diet I have not cheated on, not a bite, not a lick, not a crumb. Something about the shakes makes me queasy so I was only doing 2 a day (300 calories)- the only other "foods" I have allowed myself have been sugar free ice pops and Jello and a few times I had a couple of bouillon cubes in hot Water. Monday, in a panic, I cut down to 1 shake a day....I am still short of the goal and my anxiety level is through the roof. I have my anesthesia appt. this morning and my final weigh in and Procedure class at noon. I am terrified that they are going to postpone my surgery. I can tough this liquid nightmare out for 2 more days but if they, just as I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, add a week to this I am going to come apart.

I can not remember being this anxious about anything (and I have 3 teens!). I am sure that the lack of calories is not helping....

Anyone ever get postponed for this reason?

If your surgeon put this as a "goal" you've already succeeded! You've been on liquids for DAYS!!!! Any one person who is a food addict understands the miracle of doing something this foreign to one of us. I say congrats, settle in and get prepared for the rebirth of YOU!! It's a lot of work ie the exercise when you can start post surgery but it is worth it. Our overeating is but a symptom of what truly ails us....

I, too, was nervous prior to surgery because I thought I hadn't lost the required amount of weight. [somehow, my brain didn't remember my starting weight or even my weight on the day of the surgery]. So I asked. They didn't know of anyone that had been denied due to not loosing. My op team said they would like to see at least a loss of 10 lbs. which helps the surgeon when he/she has to flip the liver to get to the stomach.

I think the important thing, which they also said, was that a person really attempt to stay on the prescribed pre-op diet since it is good training for post-op diet and beyond. What better way to start learing to re-order your thinking about food intake with a liquid diet and a sensible meal each day.

Congratulations, stay on plan, don't binge, and relax. You're on your way!

Turns out that I only had to lose 6lbs to have the surgery...I was down 14 by the weigh in. I understand that they want you to be super motivated but I can't imagine that the anxiety coupled with the lack of calories was healthful.
When I went for surgery Friday morning I weighed in with my jacket on and was 2lbs heavier than the last weigh in. When the nurse realized that she asked me to re-weigh without the jacket hoping that I would be back down- if not she would have to call the doctor to see if he wanted to cancel my surgery.

There were several things that morning that could have resulted in the postponement of surgery- glad I had made checklists and had my husband to help me- I was not exactly clear headed.

The surgery went very well and I am feeling pretty dang good...thanks for your help!

Can you up your exercise? Talk to the surgeon and explain what you've accomplished.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
