Do I Listen To This Dr. Or That Dr.?

Recommended Posts

HELLO EVERYONE, I AM 60 YRS OLD AND CONCERNED ABOUT MY HEALTH. I HAVE SOME MEDICAL PROBLEMS INCLUDING DIABETES THAT IS NOW OUT OF CONTROL. I'M CONSIDERED A LIGHT WEIGHT FOR RNY BUT DUE TO MY DIABETES, IT'S WHAT I NEED ACCORDING TO MY BARIATRIC SURGEON. ONE OF MY PCP'S SAYS THAT IF YOU HAVE IT, I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO HELP YOU. HE FEELS THAT I CAN DO IT WITH DIET AND EXERCISE ALONE AND/OR WITH DIET pills. I SWORE NEVER TO TAKE THOSE AGAIN B/C ANOTHER DR. PRESCRIBED THEM FOR ME 8 YRS AGO AND I HAD TO GO TO THE E.R. WITH BREATHING, NERVE, AND PALPITATION PROBLEMS. I'M REALLY AFRAID OF MY WORSENING DIABETES AND REALLY AFRAID TO HAVE THE SURGERY TOO. MY MEDICAL PROBLEMS SHOULD MAKE IT A NO BRAINER B/C I DEFINITELY KNOW THAT I CAN'T DO THIS WITH DIET ALONE. NEEDING YOUR OPINION. THANKS

Hi. I'm 61 and 9 weeks out from RNY. My A1C has already dropped from 7.3 to 4.2. I am still taking metformin (500 mg 2x a day) but I expect to be off it soon. Good luck.

Maybe it is time to search out a new PCP if your current one is unable/unwilling to help you if you have surgery???

I had gastric sleeve done and I have been off my diabetes meds since the day of surgery.

Good luck!

I had my sleeve done in March of 2013, I was 59, I was a diabetic and taking 14 pain pills a day, I no longer take any diabetic or pain pills, it was the best thing I ever decided to do, I have lost 100 pounds 7 times before, but couldn't keep it off, I am at goal weight now and have been there for a year, I lost 100 pounds in the first year, I would look into having the sleeve and see what options is out there. Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
