What should I take with me to the hospital?

Recommended Posts

I have never been in the hospital before. Does anyone have advice on what to bring with me?

My surgery is Dec 23!!

You really need nothing other than a change of clothes, a hair brush and your own tooth brush. They will give you a toothbrush but the are really bad ones. I also brought my IPad because I would go crazy without it. I would make sure you have reading glasses if you need them. Also I used lip balm because my lips got so dry.

They prefer you use their hospital gowns so pjs are not necessary. They have to be able to get at your iIV easily. They will also provide robe and footies that are slip proof.

Other than that, you really need nothing.

My favorite thing I brought to the hospital was a heated blanket (heating pad). Helps with pain

Depends on the hospital, some provide a robe, others do not. I take my own toiletries, hairbrush, combs, toothbrush, a robe, , and slippers, my entertainment this time will likely be my new tablet so I can read and keep Facebook friends up to date. I usually include a change of clothes for my husband too, as he tends to spend every waking moment with me in the hospital. I don't know yet if he plans to take all 3 days off work or just my surgery day and discharge day. I hate to say me having surgery is routine, but sadly it is. Don't overpack, but don't take so little you need people to bring stuff from home. I didn't need a heating pad after my gallbladder surgery, but if you have one, keep it handy. Also, I don't know about your hospital, but, check and see when you bring the overnight bag, at checkin, or postop. I generally have my husband leave mine in the car until I'm in my own room postop. Gives him the excuse to go find himself something to eat and take a few to work through his emotions postop. This time, he will not be in the waiting room alone as in the past, friends of ours plan to be with us through the entire preop morning and taking rotating shifts through my hospital stay.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
