What pain killers are allowed pre-op?

Recommended Posts

According to my pre-op instructions, I'm not allowed to have Aspirin or NSAIDs (including Ibuprofen) during the week immediately prior to surgery. I suffer from chronic back and neck pain and require some relief. Any idea what pain killers are allowed? Advil? Tylenol? Acetaminophen? Will any of these interfere with blood clotting following surgery?

Hey, noworry, that's basically the same question I posed today regarding my arthritis. Maybe someone will have an answer for us.

Hey, noworry, that's basically the same question I posed today regarding my arthritis. Maybe someone will have an answer for us.

For now, I'm using deep heat ointments and HeadOn. I'm waiting to hear back from my pharmacist about Aleve; the assistant pharmacist felt fairly confident that it would be alright.

My doctor said: 10 - 14 days prior: NO ALIEVE - NO ADVIL - NO ASPRIN - NO NO NO.

You can take Tylenol! Vicodine!

I have a complete list from my doctor -referencing perscribed and over the counter. They gave us this info in our 3 1/2 hour pre-op class -- all the do's, don't, what to expect, and all the other q's we came up with.

BEST WISHES!!!!!!

I have Lupus and have had to have pain killers. Dr. said Tylenol only. It comes in both liquid (for your first post op days) and chewables (Tylenol Go Tabs), that I take now. Oddly, since about 3 weeks after surgery, I rarely take pain meds! Go figure!

I took my loritab and vicodin right up until midnight before surgery and the next day after surgery and been taking every since. I feel you, no pun intended. I have more metal plates, screws, pins, rods running down my back and neck than a freight train and would literally die without my pain meds. Good luck with your surgery.

It is pages and pages long -- if you wish to PM me - I will be glad to look up specific drugs to see of they are listed...

Thanks for the suggestions. I totally forgot how much I hurt without the meds until I had to stop. I'll call my doctor on Monday so he can give me a prescription when I leave the hospital. Vicodin is a great pain reliever but it puts me to sleep, so that will never work for more than a couple of days. I know losing some weight will help, but until then I don't want to hobble around moaning and groaning all the time! :)

Aleve is an antiflamtory also, such as nsaids. I don't think you can take that either. Sorry~

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
