I don't plan to weigh myself post-op

Recommended Posts

Every time I have dieted I became obsessed with the scale, weighing myself more than once a day, getting depressed at plateaus etc etc. I'm sure you all know what I mean. I turned into a weight obsessed b**ch!!

I'm planning sleeve surgery because of my co-morbidities caused by obesity, most especially my knee pain.

I don't want to fall into my old obsessive weight loss habits, so I am not planning to weigh myself except at the doctor's office. Is this wise?? Am I jeopardizing my success?

I would say measure yourself and take pics occasionally to be sure things are working okay. As long as you are confident that you are eating on plan, I think only weighing at the doctor's office is a great idea. That's what I did for the first several months after surgery and it worked great for me. I did come to a place where I had more freedom with eating and at that point I realized that I needed the accountability of stepping on the scale regularly to keep me on track. But that was several months post-surgery, and just my experience any way.

I think you should do what you feel is best for you. Let me explain though why I choose to weigh everyday. There are points where you hit a plateau, and it is SO frustrating, but when you realize you're stuck, you then know that you need to make some kind of a modification to keep going forward. For example, my biggest stall was between 165-168. I was stuck there for probably 2 months. I weigh myself once every day in the morning right when I wake up and I write the weight down in a little handheld calendar I keep in my bathroom. I've done this for my entire adult life, which is handy to have because I can look back at certain weights and see that I tend to get stuck around the same places. When I know everyday what I weigh, I can recognize when I'm stuck and make changes, but I can also notice immediately if I start a gaining trend. Last week I sat right around 145 all week, then I went out to dinner a few times and I woke up at 147 on Saturday. I've been very careful the last two days and now I'm back to 145. Weighing helps me have a quantifiable way to know exactly how I am doing and allows me to make immediate changes as opposed to waiting on doctor's visits and realizing that I just blew 6 weeks of time and gained 5 pounds.

Ultimately, you should do what you think is in your best interest, but perhaps consider the alternative options as well.

Good luck! :)

You have a thumbs up from me. I only weighed a few times for the first 3-4 months. Never suffered through a stall because I never knew if I had one (except when I was sick 2-3 months out and ended up going to the doctor a lot. I didn't lose a thing for a month but didn't care because I was so sick). I did start weighing weekly after awhile, just so I had something to post on my ticker ;)

If you've spent any time on these boards you've probably read a lot of posts whining about stalls and slow weight loss. Drives me nuts. You will be so much happier just judging your success by NSV's and how great you feel.

Oh yeah, I did take pictures, too. My sister went to TJ with me for surgery and she wanted updates (we live in different states). So glad she made me do that because a picture is worth more than any number on the scale.

Good, don't. I think we all know ourselves very well. If you know you're that girl who can't stay off of the scale and the lack of weight loss will throw your entire mood into the toilet, I wouldn't weigh either.

I think the scale is better suited as a maintenance phase item.

Not weighing was the best advice I received from the site and the best decision I made. I only weigh when I have a doctor's appointment and don't own a scale so there will be 3 months between weighs this time. Today was my first NSV I tried on a pair of size 15 (from a size 22) jeans in the juniors dept and they fit like a glove. I don't get excited from my weight because it seems to be moving slow but moving none the less but those little jeans made me come home and wake my husband up to brag lol... whatever decision you make will be the best for you Good Luck!

I know I'll be doing the same thing to my husband. He's gonna think I lost my mind

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
