when did you start eating protein bars?

Recommended Posts

Im 3 weeks PO and I just need something else to eat other than refried Beans and other purees! lol I found Pure Protein Bars (21g of Protein) and they are actually pretty soft (like brownies) and I tried one yesterday and chewed each bite until it was pretty much liquid. But, I was wondering when others started eating them? And, if you had any suggestions to other good tasting Protein Bars?

Thanks :)

This is personal opinion and not based on any medical fact but....It does seem a bit early to be trying that. Those bars are also high in Fiber ( also check out Quest bars when you are ready- same Protein #s but less sugar) and that combination may be hard to digest. But then again maybe not. I personally was a couple months out before I tried the bars. Now I am addicted to Quest bars and eat one almost every day for breakfast!!! LOL Good luck on your journey!

Yeah, I thought it was a bit early <_< Fortunately, I have had an easy recovering and my sleeve doesnt have an issue with much. :) I am having a hard time reaching my Protein goals because there is just not much I can have with the purees :( I thought trying this would help to reach my numbers. Well, so far so good with it so I think I'll keep eating them. Like I said, they are really soft and I chew each bite til its liquid so I don't know what harm they would be ?

I didn't try any Protein bars until I was cleared for a general diet, which was one month post op. If you have a nutritionist, shoot him or her an email and ask.

Here are my thoughts on variety! You can take something like chicken salad or tuna salad and put it in your food processor to make it more of a puree consistency. You can also get unflavored Protein powder and add it to a pudding cup (or, if you have a health food store near by, there is literally a brand of Protein pudding, but I can't remember the name, but I see ads for it in Oxygen magazine all the time) or Soup (don't add it to the Soup while you are cooking because it will curdle, Add it in after it is warm.

I have been on full liquids for 2 weeks and started soft foods today. I drink 2 premiere Protein Shakes a day from costco. They are 160 cal and 30 gms Protein. Not sure what the purée stage is. Most Drs have their own regimens. I was Clear Liquids, full liquids (anything you could suck through a straw after blended. Not using straw of course ). Now soft foods, anything I can crush with a fork....fish, canned chicken, cottage cheese, eggs...etc.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
