Eating Post Op after Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

my husband and I are 8 days post op. Our Dr's orders are 60g of Protein (2 Premiere drinks) and at least 32 oz of Water (sf flavored ok), sf Jello (haven't had any yet) and sf popsicles. broth is ok and counts as a "water" as there's not much Protein. I tried Swanson's chicken broth yesterday and it was discusting. Smells like barf. I think I will make the kids my own chicken and dumplings and drink the broth from that. yum!
My husband is having an aversion of the Premieres or Adkins (texture) so I have to figure out what to do about that. I think we'll try nectar protein powders with Water.< /p>

@@DimandGirl,

I had gastric bypass on 7/21/14. Besides the shakes, I am allowed to have yogurt, if it's Greek thinned down with a little milk, ProJoe which is 20 grams of Protein and Fat Free creamed Soup.I switched from fat free milk to Unsweetened almond milk since the milk seemed to give me the "runs" lol... sorry, but I'm sure we have ALL been through that stage! I used Bariatric Advantage for my shakes which are thicker and tend you fill you up quick, 27 grams (I haven't had that in a few days as I'm not hungry) Syntrax nectar, 23 grams. (The Carribean Cooler is really good.) Isopure, 40 grams per bottle. I dilute it in Water since it has the Protein taste, the ice tea I found to be the best out of them all for me. Then you can have sugar free Jello and Italian Ice. Clear broths and tea, plus 64 oz. of Water we need to drink. I had my dr. appt. today and as of this Friday I can go to the next stage! Good luck

I ate loads of SF popsicles mainly to keep myself hydrated, broth, and my Protein Drinks. I could also eat 1/2 of a yoplait light or 2 table spoons of no sugar added apple sauce but I would only do those two as my Breakfast so I could sprinkle my prilosec & Biotin onto them. Jello hurt to eat until week 3. i also didnt start drinking milk until week 3. Basically I stuck to broth Water popsicles yogurt and applesauce for 2.5 weeks. It got boring so fast! I was so happy when I could start eating food with flavor & texture!

After my 7/16 RNY surgery I drunk my Premier Protein shake..chocolate. Has a great taste too. Of course I would drink Water with crystal light and I made homemade chicken Soup without the chicken of course, It's better than the broth you buy from the stores.

Now you are more than a week post-op and must be able to digest the Clear Liquids, therefore I feel you can now introduce pureed foods into your diet and continue it for the first four weeks of the surgery.Have frequent meals but no more frequently than every 20 minutes while awake.Foods like Protein Shakes, chicken broth and Yogurt along with other fluids will also help you to stay hydrated.

Hello everybody!

Today is day 9 post-op and I had my first 8oz of Protein Shake. The first one I had in the morning was fine but when I took the second one for lunch, I experience severe stomach pain, cramps...it took about 30 mins to go away but I'm so scare to even trying again.

Does anyone experienced that feeling before? Does anyone know what caused that?

You may have drank it too fast. My NUT says i can take 40 minutes to drink 8 oz's of a shake, and 20 minutes to set a meal of solid foods. If I try to eat quicker than that, my tummy hurts also.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
