Hey sleever friends! I am 2 days, 18 hours away from my surgery. I just had all of my pre-op appointments & admissions stuff yesterday (I was at the hospital for 5 hours. At least now I know where everything is, LOL)

So... my surgery is at 10 AM on Friday. The last sip of Water I will take is at 7 AM, when I take 1 dose of Emend (anti-nausea) and a Xanax (because). My doctor has ordered nothing by mouth (NPO) until 6 am the following day (Saturday). No Water, no juice, no cough drops for the sore throat, NO ICE CHIPS! NADA! I know that I won't get physically dehydrated, because of IV fluids, but I know I'm going to be nauseous and 24 hours just seems excessive (I'm Jewish and I can't even get through the whole day on Yom Kippur without water). She's my doctor, and I've committed to 100% compliance with what she orders, but...it is just hard when I hear about so many different surgeons allowing people to at least SUCK ON A DING DANG ICE CHIP!

Does anyone/has anyone else had the same orders and how did you deal? My options in the hospital post-op are glycerin swabs and SF gum. That's kind of funny too, because my first surgeon (Dr. Baggs at Kaiser Richmond) said, "No gum, ever again", but my current surgeon has no problem whatsoever with gum.

Is this, like, not an exact science? Why so many different rules from different doctors? Thanks for listening.

Not sure but at least you get iv fluids!! I have almost the same orders although not 24 hours. my surgery is tomorrow at 2:30 pm, the last time I get food or Water is before midnight tonight. No sips or anything else. My plan is to stay up as late as I can tonight and sleep as late as I can (although no later then 11:30 as check in is at 12:30.) to avoid the temptation to drink.

I think the difference is different surgeons' beliefs about nutrition/surgery needs. For example: I've heard a lot about a pre-op liquid diet but my surgeon doesn't require it before hand.

Mine will be the same - next Tuesday the 27th. The day of surgery NPO until the next morning when they do a scan to ensure no leaks,

I am scheduled for June 30 and my facilitator said I will go 2 days without. I can have Ice chips to suck on but I can't swallow. They suggest to bring lip balm for dry lips.

I had the same orders, but a lovely nurse that was watching me for recovery gave me these moist lemon mouth swabs to wet my mouth with. They don't have enough moisture for you to swallow, but they give a little dry mouth relief.

I can't get through Yom Kippur without Water either. Tish b'Av is even worse since its in the middle of summer. Oy!

I think you'll get past it. Remember once sleeve you just start not just a new chapter , but a new book on your life. Take you time and make it a best seller.

Most people here were not allowed gum or mints or cough drops because trust me if you swallowed it you would ummmm suffer terribly! 1 month post sleeve I did not chew a small piece of crockpot chicken thoroughly enough and I thought I was having a heart attack when it lodged at my breast area inside. Scared me to death. So personally I cannot imagine what gum might do to my insides if I swallowed it after surgery. Having spent 24 hrs. in the hospital, I had surgery at 3pm, and I wanted and had sips of Water the next morning and did fine. I had the sticks for my mouth too. Surgery was 10 times easier than expected. My husband and I have never had a minute of nausea. A lot of people do, but not everyone. At 6 months post op, we still eat slowly and carefully. You will be fine. Sometimes we think the worst, we are a little scared of the surgery, but it has been great, just take one day at a time and don't worry so much! Best wishes!

LOL, luckily the Bay Area is quite delicious in July/Aug. It's actually sometimes the hottest in Sept/Oct, so HHD's can be rough...I don't know how our cantor does it!! By Neilah he can sound quite croaky!

It's not even 24 hours. It sucks but it's worth it. I would bet you a nurse will give you ice chips or a mouth swab but trust me, even if they do not, you WILL live and while you will be miserable, you *CAN* do it.

Hi there - my date is June 16th and I just met with my surgeon last week and learned about the same thing. I assume we shouldn't feel too thirsty, as you mentioned, because of the IV fluids. Fingers crossed!

I was NPO for about 36 hours and I was really worried about how I would survive it, but it was not nearly as bad as I expected. I woke up from surgery nauseated, but once that calmed down I was fine until after my leak test.

I totally had the same thing, except they didn't tell me ahead of time!! LOL maybe the anticipation is worse? You can and WILL get through it! Then you'll drink that contrast dye for your leak test like it's freaking nectar of the gods!! Hahaha

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
