Hi there! :) I have been approved for surgery and am scheduled for next Thursday the 22nd. I have to start my 3 day liquid pre- op diet on Monday. It looks like most people have to do it for 2 weeks. Anyone have my same situation and know why there is such a difference in the length of time?

I only had a 3 day clear liquid diet (Thank Goodness!) I will say the three days on Clear Liquids were my worst days of this entire process...even more than the two days post op...I was cranky, hungry, depressed and felt "empty" I can't imagine having to do that for 1-4 weeks! Every surgeon is different in the pre-op requirements, it looks like we lucked out with ours :) I asked my surgeon if everything looked good in there after surgery and he smiled and said "It was all good" I did lose 11 pounds in those three days and didn't gain anything in the hospital, so it was worth it :)

My surgeon normally does a 2 day high Protein liquid diet...but he is having me do it for 2 wks because my BMI is 50...Someone else on BariatricPal had this same question and a few ppl freaked out on her and told her that her surgeon was doing something wrong. My surgeon said that it really depends on each individual's own situation and I trust him wholeheartedly, he comes highly recommended and is considered a "Center of Excellence" surgeon. Good Luck with your surgery!! ;) :)

My doctor does a two week diet also. Under 900 calories or less. Protein Drinks, broth, sf Jello and sf Popsicles. That's it. The reason he is doing this is strink your liver so it is easier to get to your stomach and such. The higher your bmi the fatter the liver so it takes longer to strink. The first3 days are the worst cause mostly giving up caffiene. After that it was much easier. You can do this!! I am 1 week postop today!

I'm at the end of my 2-week pre-op liqui-diet. I wouldn't have complained if it were only a few days ;) I guess every surgeon is different.

tebowfan... Sounds like the same exact diet that I will start Monday and for the same reason. I guess I will be happy that I only have to do it for 3 days. You're 1 week post-op today... How has your experience been?

Shopping tomorrow for my Protein shake and stuff... any suggestions on a good Protein Drink?

My experience has been way to good. I have had no hitches. I have lost a total of 18 lbs since preop, I took minimal pain meds afterwards and started walking in hospital. Here is what I liked...gnc lean 25 chocolate Protein shake, add Water. Sf Popsicles variety and Jello. I love strawberry crush sf packets for water bottles. I also bought GNC unflavored Protein Powder and add to my pudding and Soups. I bought chicken Soup healthy & Targets brand cream of mushroom lower sodium soup. I would buy sf milk of magnesia 2 tablespoons every 4 hours till you poop. I did this about 4 days after. Gas x chewables for gas. The gas went up into my shoulders and this helped some. I did by a body pillow to help get to sleep partially on my side sooner. Not necessary though. Hope this helps. I am here if you have any other questions:)

Omg thank you so much!!! Constipation is an issue for me now and I am taking 7 pericolace pills a day to keep me regular. I was really nervous about how to handle that situation post op. You are able to eat Soup now? I have to be on the same liquid diet for a week (maybe 2.... I'll have to look) post op. I'll definitely go to GNC tomorrow for my Protein powder. ????

I am in the middle of my two week preop liquid diet. My surgeon and his nurse said that the diet had two purposes. The first being shrinking the liver and making it more pliable to reduce possible complication during surgery. The second was mental. He said the reason he did the diet for two weeks for all patient was to get them in the proper head space as they are going to have to be without solid food several weeks following surgery. I am currently using Lean whey Protein isolate from Complete Nutrition - chocolate Peanute Butter. It is quite tasty. They also have a Cookies and cream one that is tasty too. It has 24g protein and only 3g carbs and 1g fat. :)) I hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery!!

I do believe gnc is buy one and get 1/2 off these. The first 2 days are like the pre diet. The 3rd day you add in strained cream Soups and pudding.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
