Did you have GERD that cleared up after weight loss w/ sleeve?

Recommended Posts

i have GERD and take a PPI twice a day for the past several years.

my surgeon is very thorough and he really believes that once i have significant weigh loss my GERD will clear up. i carry all my weight up front and i often get asked 'when are you due"?

i will be staying on the PPI for almost a year post op or until i lose around 70 lbs however long that takes.

please share with me if you had GERD that cleared up. i have read stories about how it worsened. i would love some supportive documentation that shows i have a chance of this going away...

I had surgery in Mexico this past December. I had GERD pre-surgery but never had heartburn to tip me off that I had it. What I DID have for many years was a chronic cough that woke me up in the middle of the night but no heartburn. The GERD was discovered in a second procedure in Mexico (the day after my sleeve) because I had a build up of scar tissue from years of acid, scar tissue that if left untreated could have become cancerous. I'm almost 5 months out and If I don't take my prilosec, I have heartburn. The chronic cough is gone though :) I have an appt. with a GI doc here in Seattle at the end of the month.

I had really bad GERD for years before my surgery. I still had to take a PPI for about two months post-op while my stomach was healing, but now I only have heartburn when I go too many hours without food or Water. Its actually surprising when I get heartburn now, so yeah its pretty much completely gone. :)

I had very bad GERD before surgery. I had a hernia repair during surgery and have had no problems since surgery.(6 months out)

GERD got better, but the sleeve now requires daily PPI or I am in severe discomfort. Don't think I will ever be rid of them.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
