Smell and Taste? Did yours change?

I found this interesting. As I have always had a very keen sense of smell anyway it only increased my objection to certain foods after VSG.

Weight Loss Surgery May Change Sense of Taste and Smell April 25, 2014

Weight loss surgery patients reported a change in their sense of taste and smell, according to a recent study conducted with 103 British patients.

The patients all underwent Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass surgery.

Forty-two percent of patients reported a change in their sense of smell after surgery. Seventy-three percent reported a change in their sense of taste.

In addition to change in taste, patients reported development of a dislike of food they previously enjoyed while others reported a new aversion to some food.

Researchers also found that patients who developed a change in taste and smell, or aversion to foods lost an average of eighteen more pounds than those patients who reported no changes to their senses.

However, the study does not indicate a direct cause and effect, the results could be due to other factors.

Did you experience changes to your senses after surgery?

YES! I was "sleeved" on Dec 11 2013... and almost right away I noticed a change - I have always had keen sense of smell - but now... it’s crazy... and my sense of taste... holy craziness! I use t

I noticed it post-op, but things eventually returned more to normal for me. Of course, long-term, simply changing what you eat will cause your taste-buds to gradually adjust as well, so some things I

At first for maybe 6 months everything was just too sweet. Now at 4 1/2 years, that is not a problem at all. At first I hated the texture of salad (my love now), apple peals tasted like wood shavings to me, not a problem now.

Some things are way too sweet for me that I used to enjoy before. I also have a higher tolerance for spicy foods now. My sense of smell has always been spectacularly good to the point of being uncomfortable, and that hasn't changed lol

Oh - I would love it if I developed a taste for fish post op. I've tried to eat fish for years but can't get past the smell! It's on my list to try when the time is right.

I think cheesecake is the grossest thing in the world now, I can't stand the taste. I used to love it. I hated fish now I crave it. I used to love hot food and can't take it anymore. I can't drink hot coffee but cold coffee is great. I don't like steak too much anymore. I despise Burger King and that used to be my go to.

I like certain fish now. I love crab Rangoon. I love tilapia, flounder, bluefish... They are not very fishy

I can't get enough raw salmon now. I already liked it before, now it's an obsession. I guess it works for me positively, there's approx. 40g of protein in 2 Oz of it

I passed through the bakery section at the grocery store the other day, and the smell made me gag. I was at a different store today and walked through the bakery area there, and I didn't smell anything at all. I have a huge weakness for donuts and usually get seduced by the aromas in the store, but at least for now, that temptation is gone!

I've always had a sweet toot but since being sleeved I'm more into savoury things.

Most types, it will vary protein-wise but never less than 35grams. Sockeye I believe it is, is the really protein-laden one.

I use to love my coffee, 2 weeks out and can't stand coffee hot, but I love low fat ice coffee, which I wouldn't touch before! Funny how things change!

My taste never changed. My sense of smell has never worked well ever since a massive sinus infection when I was a kid.

I've never heard of salmon having that much Protein. Most frozen and canned salmon is about 22-25 protein grams per 3-4 ounces. Salmon does have more protein compared to other fish. Maui has only 60 calories and 15 protein grams per 6 ounce piece.
