So, I'm finally scheduled for the sleeve on April 7th! YAY! However, I'm continuing to research and I'm reading if you have acid reflex before having the sleeve it may not be a good idea to get the sleeve but rather the gastric bypass (RNY)! BOO! I'm so upset I'm sitting at the computer bawling my eyes out! Did anyone have acid reflex before the sleeve? did it get better or did it get worse? My acid reflex has been under control with Prilosec for a few years now but before Prilosec I would have terrible heartburn! I was given an upper GI where I had to drink this stuff and they would take x-rays of my esophagus. The test results had come back that I did show signs of having past heart burn problems. UGH! Wouldn't you think if it were bad enough results my doctor would tell me it wasn't a good idea for the Sleeve? Please, Can someone bring me some relief until I can get a hold of my doctor next week?

Thank you,

Jess xoxo

Hi I began having trouble with acid reflex and was taking tums then prevasid , i was going to have the sleeve but then was inform by my surgeon that the sleeve will make it worse and i would then have to have the rny , so I went with the rny. All they did was contacted my insurance and they change it in the system and approve it.

I wanted the sleeve too, but i have severe heartburn. I was told by the doctor that sleeve is not a good choice if you have heartburn. I am having an EGD on the 2nd of April and I scared to find out what my esophagus looks like. Gotta feeling it really damaged or i have barrets esophagus.

I have acid reflux too, but my doctor said I was still a good candidate for the sleeve, he told me that the lap band would McKee it worse, he said he would check for a hernia

Hi Jess, first off congrats! I saw a gastroenterologist last week for my endoscopy. He said after the sleeve I will continue to have acid reflux, however as I lose weight, the symptoms should subside.. I know it's all very scary. I started in the journey 2 months ago and hope to have my surgery in the fall. But as I take each step I am beginning to realize this is what I need to do. I need to lose weight to live a long healthy life and I need this tool to do it.. No matter the after affects, it will all be better then being over weight and developing health related issues that could last my life time. I hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck :)

I used to take Nexium daily. Then I noticed when I ate healthier I was able to only take 3 - 4 times a week. As my surgeon recommended, I took Prilosec daily post op for 6 mos. Now I may take 1 or 2 Prilosec in a month. For me, the greasy fattening food was what caused mine. Now, I rarely have a problem. My surgeon and I discussed my heartburn before surgery and since mine was already better with a better diet, he felt like the sleeve was still a good fit for me.

Good luck however you decide to go. The bypass is a good surgery as well. I have many friends who have had it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
