My Doctor Really Pushed for RNY

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the info, and the questions Faith. I am actually going to call and talk to him tomorrow about his techniques and if his statistics are wrong (his said 36-38% but, he said there has been documentation of 50-70%..I went back and re-read through everything he gave me), does he keep up with the newest techniques, etc. You've got some good questions for me to ask him.

Thanks!

You're very welcome! I am going to PM you with my list of questions to ask the surgeon and the center. There are a few duplicates in the three documents, but you can pick out the ones you want to ask.

Good Luck!

I just wanted you to know that I work for surgeons who perform both the Lap-Band and the Gastric Bypass and the decision has to be yours. Our Bypass patients all feel like they have had the best procedure and our Lap-Band patients all feel as though they have had the best procedure. There's a chance for complications with either procedure. You must have discipline in order for the Lap-Band to work and as long as you know that, I think that you will have great success! Good luck to you....I wish you the best!

In all fairness there reaches a point where one requires discipline in order for bypass to work. It's not a cure all/fix all. When they don't have the discipline required for bypass they get revision to banding.

That is 100% correct. They both take discipline, dedication and an entire lifestyle change. I just wanted to let her know that I think she will be successful with her choice.

Do you have one of the procedures?

Didn't know anyone was still active on this thread. I talked with the doctor/nurses and everything was all sorted out. I'm banded now, and glad to be on this side! I'm very optimistic at this point.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
