Food(s) you thought you loved...

Recommended Posts

This is a follow up thread to the posting recently made by Jamilyne. She asked if there were foods that you missed eating since becoming banded. I thought it was a fun discussion.

So, as a follow up, are there any foods that you thought you loved but now realize, not so much?

For me it's hotdogs. Now that we really have to chew, chew, chew our food, you really get the opportunity to extract the flavor from the food. I now think that the actual taste of a hot dog is horrible. I guess pre-banding, I swallowed the hotdog in big chunks and really didn't taste all of the awful fat & byproducts in the hotdog.

Do you have a food that you use to love that you now see it for what it is?

Sandwiches (including hamburgers).

Basically I get stuck on bread so often I'm getting increasingly food averse to it so sandwiches which I used to love for convenience are now a disappointing option at best and I usually end of deconstructing them and eating them with a knife and fork just throwing the bread away.

(This did lead to the discovery that it's cheaper to order a subway sandwich with extra vegetables and use the flatbread like a plate than to order one of their salads. Way to take advantage of the health conscious)

McDonalds fries...I put one in my mouth a few weeks ago as a joke (never intending to chew or swallow it) and the taste was DISGUSTING. It made me smile...once I spit it out.

Most fast foods. Especially hamburgers. They just don't have the zing and satisfaction they once had. Once upon a time I couldn't drive by a McD's without stopping and buying a double cheeseburger. I loved em. But now, eh!

pizza. i do take a fork to it once in awhile and eat the toppings.

I'm having a hard time since my fill in jan.2014. First one. I was banded in aug 2013. My problem is that I am pbing almost at every meal but onky the 2-3 bites in then afterwards I can finish eating with no problem. Then there's the 4-5x a day I have to take the 6 pills each time. Since fill I take pills after I eat about 30 min. I get them down they fill stuck in my throat...have heartburn type feeling with alot of pressure and I get a horrible headache. Now I get chronic headaches always have and I've never had a problem until banding and worse since 3 cc fill. Maybe my throat is too tight before eating and what do you think I should do and the pills? I have to take them about 33 in all and it takes about 2 hours after taking pills and feeling horrible putting ice on my neck and head before it lets up. By then it's usually time to eat again or take pills again. See its round robin. I am willing to do this and keep on going but just need some advice on how to handle. I see my lapband dr next wednesday and a letter to him outlining just what I've said. But need my buddies opinions too. Thx

Donna, you should copy and repost your thread in a new topic/thread? There are only 5 people following this thread. You'll find that there are hundreds of people following the topics threads and you'll get a better response that way?

New topics should always be started under the lap band forums and then select "New Topic"! Good luck.

If you repost as a new topic you might add information as to weight loss and if the band is working? Are you in the green zone etc? Sounds like this is something only your doctor can advise on?

I'm with Fredric on the sandwiches. I rarely have one, but when I do, I end up taking the bread off. Oh how I used to love taking a big bite out of a sandwich! Now it's just way to frustrating, so I'm like.....why bother? Sometimes I'll order a cheeseburger, and think to myself....I'm going to eat whatever I can, and take the rest. Since being banded, the bread gets in the way, and makes it difficult to control the size of my bite. Especially with the lettuce, Tomato & onion :D

My Exception: I haven't had the guts to try a pastrami on rye. OMG...A pile of fresh pastrami on two slices of dark rye bread, lightly buttered with a smear of Dijon mustard, sauerkraut and provolone cheese. Pure heaven. I could eat half of one now but the thought of making the pile of pastrami into a few slices, cutting off the crust of the bread just taints the entire experience. And I'd be an idiot to try it in a restaurant without checking to see if they had several bathroom stalls to slime in :P

Yes, mine is anything deep fried. Same sort of thing where now I have to chew it up real good and I taste the dirty flavor of the grease (especially french fries) and it just does not give me the satisfaction it use to. Makes it pretty easy to stop eating them.

Okay - I have to walk away from this thread & go eat some tuna for lunch. All this talk of Chinese food and pastrami sandwiches.......french fries, cheeseburgers, cheesecake.... "lions, tigers and bears - OH MY"

For me, that's steak. I've gotten stuck with it twice. I can now eat a ribeye but not my filets. Chewing it to smithereens is not that great for me anymore. My poor fiancé absolutely loves all things red meat and keeps cooking it. I keep eating less and less of it to where I have to snack later. He hasn't caught onto my hints that I'm not liking steak that much anymore. I haven't tried sandwiches yet but I think they'll be on the list.

i also take a lot of pills, about 18 alone in the morning. i found if i take them with just a little swallow of Water and wait the Water liquidfies the pills so they go through the band. if i swallow to much water the pills get stuck. i found this out through trail and lots of errors. i found that maxalt is a wonderful headache reliever. i take it when my headache gets to a 6-7 on the pain scale. i have also called my pcp on some of my pills to ask for a smaller version of the same acting pill. everytime i have asked i have gotten something different. this has helped alot. all this trouble also started with my last fill in jan. the other thing i do for my pain med's, during the day and my xanax is i just chew them into a paste and swallow with a drink. this also helps and i haven't been stuck since doing this. i have also taken some of my morning pills and split them with my nightime pills so i don't have as many in the morning. you are going to have to be creative. this is where my surgeon wasn't of any help. but my pcp is and also my pharmasist. i am on a first name basis with him and will call and ask him what i can do. like with prilosec prescription strength but it is in a capsule. he was able to advice me that even i time released capsules that is is okay to take capsule apart and swallow all the little beads just don't chew them. ask your doctor about maxalt. i swear by it for a headache. i wish you well. and hope i have helped in a small way.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
