Gastric Sleeve over Gastric Bypass / Switch?

My bariatric Dr wants me to get the switch or bypass. I was looking into the sleeve. I am 5'8" and 300lbs with type II diabetes, high blood preasure and triglycerides, sleep apnea. Has anyone else with these health issues chose the sleeve instead? If so, how did your results turn out?

13 months ago I had high blood pressure (then 150/102, now 122/92), don't know what my triglycerides were and had sleep apnea (I stopped using my CPAP at 9 months post-op, after losing 105lbs) So I think it turned out well for me. I chose the sleeve because I didn't want to deal with being required to take Vitamins for the rest of my life, plus having my guts rerouted really creeped me out. :-)

Fortunatley, the doc I chose only advocates the sleeve. If he had been pushing for RNY or some other surgery, I'd have found another doc. But that's just me, I had done my research and I knew what I wanted.

I was told at an informative session on the several types of bariatric surgery that diabetes patients have more success with RNY than the sleeve. I don't have diabetes, so maybe sleeves with diabetes can share their experience . Ask your dr why he thinks the surgery he suggested is better than the sleeve.

Thank you both for your reply. And, Congratulations on your weightloss. Joatsaint, I agree with you about the whole rerouting thing, which is one reason I mentioned the sleeve as my choice. The Dr did say that it was ultimately my choice.

I have all of the above and then some. My Dr. suggested the sleeve because he stated it had a weight loss success rate equal or higher than the gastric bypass......and this is why the sleeve is the only one he will do now. I did a lot of research gastric bypass was not an option for me.......lap band was my first option until I started research. The slippage, erosion, and seeing what a few of my friends are going through....No! The sleeve is for me.

My doctor also suggested the rny bypass. I was BMI 40, type 11 diabetes, and high bp. The bypass is slightly more successful in the literature at eliminating the need for diabetes meds.

I researched and decided to so the sleeve anyway. When I told the surgeon I was scared of strictures and dumping with the bypass, he quickly said the sleeve would be fine.

I am 7 weeks out today and have already eliminated my meds for diabetes; no more insulin, glipizide, or metformin. It has been a blessing and a miracle for me.

Keep in mind, not all patients reverse their diabetes quickly, I was lucky. But I also was not willing to risk the problems of the bypass.

WOW, congrats and great job on the weightloss for those who have posts with that included. Thank you all for sharing your info. I am pretty sure I want the sleeve now. I had yet another dr for the upper gastro test tell me today she would highly recommend the sleeve as well. She discussed some of the complications with the other two surgeries. I will be scheduling the actual surgery for May. Thanks again all. Looking forward to learning more from members here. I just ordered Alex Brecher's book - The BIG Book on the GASTRIC SLEEVE.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
