Almost 4 weeks post-op with very little weight loss

Recommended Posts

I've done my best to stay motivated and positive following my vsg surgery. I'm following the guidelines of the NUT and staying between 500-800 kcal daily with at least 60 g Protein. I make sure I get enough fluids in daily and exercise by walking on the treadmill. Some days I have over done it on the exercise and had zero energy the next day. I am not in any pain and am able to eat what I want as long as I chew it up really, really well. My meals consist of fish, chicken, turkey or eggs with a daily Protein Shake, greek yogurt and if I haven't gotten in my protein near the end of the day I'll have some cottage cheese. My question is: why am I not losing weight? Immediately following surgery in the hospital, I was down 10 lbs. Since then, I've only lost one more. Any ideas? I have a 4 week follow up this coming Wednesday and will ask then as well. I hope the fear I had pre-op that I may go through all of this for nothing is not coming true! Thanks for any support and enlightenment you can provide.

I don't have answers but I just wanted to say that I am in a similar boat, and I know how frustrating it is. Good luck.

I tried upping my calories to throw my body a curveball and it worked. Are you getting any carbs? Any fruit? That seemed to help me somewhat too. My body could not function well with out any carbs at all. Some people may disagree with me but I was not losing on essentially no carbs. Also, are you able to use the bathroom regularly that made a huge difference for me.

This line makes me suggest something...

Some days I have over done it on the exercise and had zero energy the next day.

Try exercising less and eating more. Try a little more Protein. Use a Protein Drink maybe for the calories and Protein.< /p>

How is your sleep? This can have an effect.

How much did you lose in what timeframe prior to surgery?

What are the details, they matter? Sometimes pushing harder may cause the body to go into preservation mode. The good news is if we have a famine people like you and I will be the last to die from starvation..........

Lol. I think my body refuses to deplete itself of the fat it has been holding onto for years. (Maybe it is a sentimental thing?) In any case, as far as sleep patterns goes- I have had vivid crazy dreams and toss and turn constantly. This may also have to do with lack of energy. I've been hard pressed the last two weeks to stick to the Proteins and only carbs in the main items I'm eating- no additional. This is because my surgery was right before the holidays and being at my sister's house I was around the massive holiday cooking the entire time. I sampled foods I shouldn't have eaten but was really good about it. I was honest at my two week appointment about this. But we are talking 2 macaroni noodles of mac and cheese, one cubic inch of a sweet potato, and 3 green Beans of green bean casserole! I'm hardly stretching my sleeve! However, I still wage war with feeling hungry most of the time and have to elicit all out self control not to go on a ravenous eating rampage. (Not that I'd get far.) But seriously, I just am frustrated at the lack of loss and it is wearing on my self control not to see results with everything I've done to get this far.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
