Can I smoke after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I tried to find this answer somehwere, but I could not. I just want to know if I will be able to smoke marijuana after surgery, or will it not help the healing process. Im sure I could a couple months after, but could I the next day after surgery? And no im not trying to be funny. I really wonder about this.

JubJub-

I definitely would not smoke the next day! I'm 3 yrs out, big puffer for like 15 yrs. and I gotta tell you I waited at least a week...if I recall correctly! It's good to take a break now and then anyway and clear your head...send me a private message if you really want to talk about this....I'm doubting that many on this forum would even touch this subject. I'm quite new to this forum, though Ive been banded for 3 years.

ABP:)

I agree with ABP. There's no reason to test whether there'd be any ill effects of smoking the day after, right? There's certainly no benefit to it, and you'll have pain meds to use if you're uncomfortable. Give yourself AT LEAST a week. And even better, wait until you're fully healed and back on solid food so the loss of inhibition that goes with getting high (and this goes for any mood-altering substance, alcohol, whatever) won't send you grabbing for the chips before your body is ready. Your stomach needs to heal so your band will set in place properly, and that process can take way more than a week.

Good luck with your surgery!

Thanks again, got another question. What is the pre diet for? It really sucks. Would it be ok if I like ate ramen noodle juice, but maybe had like a quarter of the pack of noodles? Popsicles are good and juice is good, but im really wanting something I can chew.

When speaking with the doctor before the siminar he told me I had to be smoke free for 3 months or they would not do the surgery. And that they would test for it!! so whether or not i want to smoke or not I HAVE TO quit. But it's best for my health so i will have to find something else to keep me from eating everything in the house. My friend said drink lots of Water when i feel the urge to smoke or chew gum.

The preop diet is to get some fat off your stomach and liver, because they have to lift the liver to get to the stomach to put the band on. It helps prevent any injuries to your liver. I encourage you to stay as close to your doctor's instructions at all times as you can.

The preop diet is one of the worst aspects of being banded, but you can (and will) survive it :(

they told me that smoking increases chance of ulcers and they wont take the chance of having ulcers while doing surgery. So *shrug* i need to quit any way. The only way i was successful on quitting was when i was pregnant...and i'm not doing that just so i can quit smoking again LOL . And sine i dont have a mother in law any more , my life isn't near as stressful lol :(

Here's something to get you to quit altogether. My husband died at age 40 from lung cancer. he'd smoked since he was around 16. he was diagnosed with the cancer at 38, fought a terrible, horrible, painful battle and died in excruiating pain. The cancer had spread to his brain, skull, spine, hip bone and liver. His spine was cracking from the tumors eating through it. Let me tell you, he quit cold turkey the second he was diagnosed, after years of telling me he was addicted and couldn't quit. he quit when he had to face the biggest incentive there is (death). He was a pot smoker as well, but not heavy. And yes, his smoking definitely caused the cancer. he had small cell, which is very aggressive, and 99% of folks with that kind are/were smokers.

Why not quit while you're in the midst of doing something else good for you, and give your body an extra big present? I hate to sound like I'm lecturing (although I know I am), but why go to the trouble of saving your body with the lapband if you're going to destroy it with smoke?

just like my DH would say as he put on his seatbelt "better buckle up, I don't want to waste all this chemo . . . "

sorry, but I had to put my two cents worth in. it's something that affects me deeply

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
