Help! im moving to the USA, and need insurance advice

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm moving to the United States next year, either Florida, California, or NY. Recently, I've been really nervous about not being able to get health insurance.

I'm 26 years old, and had the lap band 3 years ago. I now have a 29 BMI, and I have had no complications from the band.

I plan on working for a company that offers I'm sure offers health insurance for their employees. But lately, I have been really nervous that somehow they won't want to cover me because I had this surgery.

Can anyone shed light on whether or not I could get insurance as an individual? If I work for a company, is the insurance company still allowed to exclude me?

Thank you for your help, Im sooo nervous about it.

Hi Snowhard,

If you're coming on to your group's medical plan, in most states you can't be excluded because of your health condition. I know that's the case in NY, at least. Is the company you're coming on to a large company (i.e., is it self-funded)? If it's a huge corporation that covers itself, it is responsible for making all the coverage decisions. If they want you, you're in.

Call the company personnel dept and ask if they have group coverage. I'm covered under my husband's group insurance and have so many things wrong with me they probably hated to see me coming. but they couldn't refuse me or cover me at a different rate....

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
