How much weight can I expect to lose?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3/8 and am on a liquid diet - mostly slim fast shakes and SF Jello.

How much weight do most people lose in the 6 weeks prior to 1st fill? I've only had about 600 calories a day since the day after surgery but I assume I will start to eat a little more as time goes by.

Can anyone help me with an idea of what it was like for them, eating and losing, in the first weeks after surgery?

Hi Chrissie!

Everyone's weight loss is so different. You will see it if you watch the board that results are all over the place. You didn't give your start weight which has a lot to do with it. I lost 9 the first 2 weeks when I saw the doc post-op, and I am now down 14 pounds. I am six weeks today! That is 1 1/2- 2 pounds a week, and 14 pounds that I am sure I will never see again!

Eating... Tomato Soup and yogurt for "clears', then scramble eggs and chicken noodle Soup for "mushies" were my best friends! It feels like forever, but that stage will be gone before you know it.

When I am faithful to my exercise it comes off quicker. Not rocket science, but it works! Good luck with everything. Let us know how it goes. Here's a few things to look out for in the next few weeks.

Stay hydrated (for health reasons as well as helping with weight loss) and don't worry if your restriction gets less after a few weeks when the stomach heals. Just hang in there if it does until your first fill... it's more of a process than I understood in the beginning. But so worth it! I have never been "satisfied" with such small and normal amounts of food. It feels great. So much easier to make good decisions when you are not hungry all the time. That is the key!

Happy losing!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
