I am exactly 3 weeks away from my surgery and I've been open about having the surgery with my family, friends and co-workers. As the days grow closer I having been getting asked "Are you nervous?". My answer has been "no but that could change". Right now I am filled with anticipation and excitement to begin a whole new healthier chapter of my life. I am looking forward to being able to do things that I couldn't do because of my weight. I think that has been my focus thru this whole process. I'm sure my nerves will kick in a little as my surgery date gets closer but I hope to maintain my excitement.

Hello Congratulations on your surgery date! Excitement is definitely a better a better emotion to start the adventure with. An adventure it certainly is as each day I have small NSV's (non scale victory). Easier to move, clothes loosing up, etc. I am 3 weeks out from surgery and had similar questions asked by it seemed like everyone that I knew as the surgery date got closer. My typical response was "no, I've researched it thoroughly and I am confident this is what I need to do". Once people saw that I was confident about it they backed off a little. I go back to work next week and am expecting a deluge of "how much have you lost?" LOL - much better question given all that effort put forth to make it happen.

My surgery was yesterday and I was calm going in and feel amazing and accomplished right now. Except for no sleep, all is good!

I hope I feel those same feelings on my big day. I have had surgery (gallbladder) before so I think that may contribute to me not being nervous. Congrats on your surgery!!! I'm glad to hear your doing well and I wish you much success!!!

I've just cancelled my surgery. Was supposed to have it on 22 Nov, but as my research continues I am not so convinced anymore. I just wonder where all the people are who have had their sleeve for 5+ years are on the Internet. All I seem to find on the intranet and You Tube is forums and films which have people who have had the surgery in the last 2 or so years. Now, I know that the sleeve is a relatively new surgery, but even so. WHERE ARE YOU 5+ YEAR SLEEVERS TO CONVINCE ME THAT THIS IS REALLY A LONG TERM SOLUTION THAT IS WORTH IT? Let's proof the medical research which suggests that many/some/a certain percentage gain most of the weight back on AND at the same time suffer life-long complications. Has anyone found any good online source of success stories from 5+year sleevers? Please let me know.

Well if I'm not mistaken gastric bypass was the preferred surgery by most insurance companies until a few years ago. You see it more now because people can get it covered. You probably don't see anyone over 5 years too often because it hasn't been around long and it's only recently become a preferred method of WLS.

Wow you cancelled after (most likely) so much waiting and hard work to get to that point? Are you able to reschedule?

I asked myself also what you wrote but as the post above says, sleeve is fairly new and not used hardly as much as the RNY was 5+ years ago... so that's why you won't see much if any 5+ year sleevers out there... also it's been suggested to me that people who have WLS are usually into the online forums and post about their experiences for probably the first 2-3 years, then lose interest and drop off because they've gotten used to and settled into their new life. So that could be another reason for not seeing many veteran experiences out there.

I've just gotten approved for the procedure after 5 months of process and red tape - while I am also nervous and have my concerns, I'm convinced that the outcome will surely be better than my current physical state and quality of life. I'm stoked and can't wait

Actually. .. sleeve has been around for about 20 years.. it was done as a gateway surgery for people that were too heavy to have rny... when people started having such great results without all the complications they started offering it as a stand alone surgery. As far as 5+ years out... I have read many threads on this forum of people who are 5, 6, 7 years out and doing great. Sleeve isn't a magic fix all... it still involves hard work and commitment, but whem you give it that hard work and commitment it sure helps you along nicely. And if you do some research the statistics are staggering! Not to mention wls increses life span by an average of ten years. See... most of us can work our butts off to successfully lose weight. .. but statistically we can't kerp it off. Thats whrte the sleeve comes in... but again, it sounds like you are uninformed and shouldn't have wls until you become informed. Good luck

^{I firmly believe that one should NOT have the surgery unless they are sure they want and can follow the required life afterwards. As in most things, the surgery is generally safe and effective, but life, well, life is hard!}

I feel exactly the same L-in-NJ!!! I'm anxious but not nervous (yet)! I am 2 weeks and a few days away from my "new birthday" I'm in Jersey too. Surgery with Dr. Abkin.

Our dates are close blueslp. Praying that we both have successful surgeries!! I'm having mine done at Penn with Dr. Schurict.
