I am inordinately annoyed by people who lie about their surgery. It's one thing to keep details to yourself and tell the truth while sidestepping the *whole* truth. But to outright lie? That's just silly.

And annoying.

I don't like it. Either keep it entirely private or tell the truth. Don't be a liar.

I realize this is not my typical wordy post. I'm annoyed, cut me some slack. Also, this is not directed at anyone in particular here at the forums. It's something I've noticed amongst my set of real life WLS patients.

I have one of those in my life. She is now selling some weight loss "vitamin" and swears her loss has nothing to do with her gastric. I've called her out on it on her FB enough so that she's blocked me. WHOOOOOOPS!

I have chosen to keep my surgery and details to myself, I only told my hubby, son and daughter in law, and my boss(because I needed the 2 weeks off). I have been on diets forever, so people just naturally assume that some new diet I'm on is working, and I don't tell them anything different. It helps that I lose slowly, only 1-2 lbs a week so it's not a rapid "OMG, are you sick, what did you do to lose weight?" If someone was to point blank ask me if I had surgery, I would probably tell them, especially if it was someone that could benefit from WLS.

I too, kept my surgery private. I only told my family, close friends and my pastor and his wife. It's my private/personal business. I had surgery four months ago and lost 87 pounds to date. I've gone to church and nobody even commented on my weight loss which suits me fine!

If someone were to ask how I am losing weight I will tell them I've been laying on my @$$. It's partly true . . . Three days after my surgery I found out I had been walking on a broken foot for three months. I've been in a cast since and am facing reconstruction surgery. My surgeon had ordered me to stay off my foot. I am only allowed to stand to transition from the couch to the bathroom and to bed. My family and friends push me with the walker that has a seat and I am in a wheelchair when I go out. It's been a bittersweet journey so far but hopefully by the time I am healed from the surgery and back on both feet I will be a whole new less of a person. *grin*

I'm with you Cheri. I'm all for people keeping it private. But I've heard of more than one person whose plan was to claim some other medical condition to explain weight loss....including one who wanted to claim cancer. That was the true icing on the cake.

That's absurd! Claiming it was cancer?!?! Obnoxious and completely lacking in integrity.

OMG!! Claiming cancer?!? That's ...URGH!!! No words! WHY would you want to make your loved ones worry about you unnecessarily?!?!? I was/am very open about mine, it's a personal choice, but I ABHOR lying!!! What's funny is in alot of cases that's not even true. Plenty of people don't exercise and quite a few here have an anti-diet mentality. In all sincerity, I'm wondering what those people say. Not poking fun here I'm truly curious.

As someone with an anti-diet mentality (if I think I am on a diet, all I think about is food but if I think I am just eating like everyone else, then I am fine. I know, it's strange), if someone asks how I have lost weight, then I tell them the truth about the surgery but major on what has improved Healthwise for me. Most folk are fine with that.

Only avoided telling one person the whole story as she has a mouth as wide as the local river and a nasty habit of getting the wrong end of the stick then gossiping. I said I had had surgery (didn't say what kind and she didn't ask) and that, as a result, I was eating differently, less volume and focusing on Protein. I was glad we only talked briefly about it and that she hadn't asked any questions, then we moved on to all her woes - but the story that came back to me was that I had turned into a diet obsessive and that was all I could talk about... sigh...

But even with my anti-diet mentality, I won't lie... don't do it about other stuff in life either. But I respect that others, for good reasons known only to them, may not want to share that they've had surgery and I am cool with that. We shouldn't need to justify any of the decisions we take in relation to this surgery and how we live with our sleeves. If there's a situation where I feel that i don't want to tell someone what I have done, then I won't. But i just won't lie about it...

Each to their own, would be a dull world if we were all the same.

I tell people that I consulted a doctor (truth), I am working with a NUT (truth), I am doing high protein/low carb (truth), exercising my ass off (truth) and cut out the bad things (my tummy - truth).

I have told select people, some family members, some friends, some coworkers and a whole bunch of total strangers. I hesitate to tell, not because I am ashamed of my decision (best one of my life so far!), but because I don't want to explain the surgery over and over, I don't want all the questions that I know will come from people who are asking for the wrong reasons, I want to be ME - LIPSTICKLADY - I do not want to be me, the girl who had WLS, one that no one really knows about. Does that make sense?

I guess I'm different.... I tell everybody ..... my husband tells everybody .... I see no reason for me to not tell.... we've not met any negativity yet but I'm sure I will at some point .... I could careless what they have to say.... its not their health and their lives and needed to be saved.... it was mine....

I'm with Lipstick Lady. There are just so many people around me, and I don't like the idea of being the subject of speculation. However, being in the beginning stages of this I don't know what I will do long term. That said, CANCER???? Jesus. My lie to a couple of people, which isn't a lie because in my case it is also true, is that I had hiatal hernia surgery. And the medical protocol for that surgery is similar anyway. Sigh. I'm an open book most of the time; I don't know why I am having trouble with this one.

This makes total sense. After 18 months I'm tired of being the guy that lost all the weight. It's not even about the surgery anymore....although everyone knows about it. It's the "wow....how much weight have you lost?" Or...."how much more are you going to lose?"

Well since I've been in maintenance for 9 months I'd say the answer is the same as last time you asked me.

Really, sometimes I'd like to get some business cards made that say "yes I had WLS....I lost alot of weight...now leave me the fuck alone."
