New from Oklahoma - question about surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone! I'm in Tulsa, OK and considering lap band surgery. I've been lurking for about a week, and decided it's time to jump in to the discussion. :) I attended a seminar last night and the question was raised about slipping. The doctor said they suture the band to the wall so they don't have a problem with that. Is that pretty standard? Thanks in advance,

Rose

sewing the band into the stomach is standard as far as i know. that doesn't mean there is not a possibility of slippage, it is just less likely. oh, and welcome, from one okie to another :)

I thought that they just placed the band around your stomach I am pretty sure my Dr didn't suture me? I had the LapBand 7/06 and it was so so worth it. Recovery -to me-was not that bad at all. I asked my Dr about slippage and he said unless you eat a 20oz T-Bone and wash it down with a whole pie or cake the chances of the band slipping are very rare. I just joined this web site so i guess we are both new. If you have any more questions I am here to help.

I seem to recall the slippage rate being quoted as 1%. Our practice has a slippage rate of a bit under 1 percent so that seems right to me.

Dr. Spivak always sutures the band into place.

I live in the Tulsa area and I was wondering which seminar you attended. I've seen Dr. Fisher with Surgical Associates.

My band was sutured to my stomach - they take a small piece from each side and suture it around the band (in a small area)- this keeps it from slipping - it is pretty standard - you can't tell that it is done. you don't feel it!

I attended the Surgical Associates seminar. I can't remember who did the presentation, but it wasn't Dr. Fisher. Have you had a consult with Dr. Fisher yet? I've heard he is very good.

It was probably Dr. Katsis. I already had my consult with Dr. Fisher. I liked him a lot. He was very open and honest about everything. When I first started thinking about surgery I wanted the whole bypass, but when I had my consult, Dr. Fisher suggested the band since I want more children someday. So after talking more with him, and doing some more research on my own, I changed my mind. I'm really glad he mentioned it, otherwise I don't think I would have even considered it. He really impressed me. And his nurse Anita is really great. I call her all the time with questions.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
