Acid Reflux Disaster - Next -- Gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I'm a bit sadden because I may end up with the gastric bypass by the end of the month (Nov). :(

My acid reflux has been given quite a bit of trouble lately. Two weeks ago, I had the upper endoscopy (biopsy) done and found a hital hernia and ulcers. My doctors are recommending the gastric bypass to ensure my esophagus/reflux does not get any worse and for long term care.

I am afraid because I tend to forget my Vitamins. I hate taking pills. I have been using chewables, but even then... I'm forgetful. I get the final word by the end of next week to proceed.

I don't regret ever having the sleeve, it definitely improved my health & my life. Thanks for listening, Irene

My heartburn has been horrible lately. I never had it before surgery but since surgery I do. Ive been taking 2 24-hour Previcid (total of 30 mg's) daily and still have to pop antacids like they are candy. I talked it over with my wonderful surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he put me on Nexium (the little purple pill) and instructed me to take it twice daily. Each pill is 40 mg's. Ever since I started taking it, no more antacids and no more heartburn. AND...I only take the one pill a day. But he said that if that doesnt do the trick then I will have to get scoped and there was something he could do with a scope to relieve it before taking a drastic measure.

I too have terrible heartburn after surgery. Is the nexium a prescription?

Yes Nexium is a prescription. Walgreens said it was $40 but I went online to the Nexium site and you can sign up for a coupon card (its free) and you will only have to $18 per prescription as long as you present the card each time you pick up your Nexium. Thats cheaper then the generic Previcid 24's I was buying at Target.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
