So this whole time i was thinking I wanted to get the sleeve but i just went to a second seminar and i am stuck in the middle. I feel like there are good things about both, but i hear long term the bypass helps you more. Also with the dumping syndrome it will discourage me from eating any sweets. I am also probably going to cancun to see Dr. Perez since I will be doing self pay. Any suggestions?

It comes down what you believe is best for you and your lifestyle. I choose the sleeve because I thought the bypass was for the extreme. For people that could get up and move. 400lb plus people. If you are going with the bypass just because of the dumping to prevent you from eating the wrong things you might want to look into why you want this surgery. You are going to have to have will power and its not easy you will have to work at it either with the bypass or the sleeve. Its a tool that helps by helping you not eat so much. It doesn't force you to eat right, follow the rules, and work out. all that is on you.

Again its up to you what surgery you choose but I wouldn't put you in the extreme category by looking at your profile.

Everyone is different. So one person might lose more than another or lose faster or slower than someone else. If you are willing to put the time in and do the work you can lose 100lbs with the sleeve no problem. I am 9 months out and have lost 140lbs so far. But I started at 360lbs so I had more to lose. I also work out 5-6 times a week.

Lie said it comes down to what best is for you and how much you will work to get to where you want to be. Just do as much research before you decide. I started with thinking I wanted the band and started everything just to drop out and wait almost 2 years before coming back to have the sleeve surgery. I was mentally ready for the surgery and want to do more research before hand.

This is a great site to ask questions and learn.

I'm one of the extreme types, and the sleeve has worked great for me...lost over 100lbs in the last 4+ months...the sleeve will not let you overeat, try it and it will bite you back...I know, once I got back to eating real food I tried to eat too much, or to eat too fast, either one will teach you very quickly to change your habits. I have so much more energy and life is getting better and bette every day...my own mantra is Go Sleeve! But we all have to make our own choices.

Congrats Allan Cameron thats awesome. I do feel like I have been leaning towards the sleeve for the last few months maybe the Doctor who did the seminar just made the bypass seem a little more appealing.

I did not choose either of the bybase types of surgery partially because of the dumping issues. I want to live a normal life after surgery, and already just over four months I'm able to go out to most any resturant I want (though I eat really small portions and take home the rest almost all the time). I can go for walks without worry of having to find a facility (most of the time). I'm 56 and wanted to get my life back befor I retire, and especially be able to be active for my retirement. The Sleeve is letting me get there, and I expect to loose at least another 100+ pounds.

Well, you are asking on a SLEEVE site, so just remember that when you hear the responses. You might try over at RNYtalk.com also and see what those people think.

Remember not ALL bypass people end up with dumping. Or if they do sometimes it's only temporary until their body adjusts.

Do your homework and figure out what is best for you. You have a lower BMI, the sleeve should allow you to get to goal, if you work it properly.

You can dump with the sleeve as well...Not as much but you can if you eat something that does not agree with you!

The reason I chose the sleeve was because I could still use part of my stomach to get nutrients..Where you have to depend on your intestines to pull as much good from what you eat as it can...

Remember your body works so that your stomach acids take most of the value out of what you eat and then disgarded and sent to the intestines where it processes what is left and gets rid of it...

We really need to take in all the important nutrients when we have one of these surgeries....We are in a weakened state at first and then because we can eat only a little we need to get the most bang for our buck...I would chose the sleeve over and over again if I had to.....

But it is up to you.....All the best in your choice.... :)

Have you met with the doctor one on one yet? That's when we looked at my particular situation and came up with the decision together.

I don't know if the dumping syndrom is permanent.....I travelled with a bypass patient, and at 5 years out, she clearly did not have that......but she did experience it early after surgery.

I understand the calorie absorption of the bypass is not permanent, but the malabsorption is....if you are anemic or have any other nutritional concern, bypass may not be the best choice.

As you said, they both have their merits......good luck whatever you decide.....I know people who have the bypass and someone who had the sleeve, and they all had 200+ pounds to lose and everyone did it very successfully and are maintaining.

I have a friend who had gastric bypass over 10 years ago and is regaining. Not all of it but she is now overweight. You also have Carnie Wilson who publicly confessed you can regain after bypass surgery. That was an eye opener to me that any WLS is just a tool and life long changes in diet and exercise must be permanent. I ultimately chose the sleeve over the bypass because the malnutrition issues are more common with bypass than with the sleeve. Both my children are the result of my resistance to a daily pill regimen. I want to be able to get the majority of my nutrients through my food consumption. I started at 230lbs 5'3.5" on 6/6/2013. Current weight as of 10/22/2013 is 177. BMI says I should weigh around 130. I have 7 more months until my 1 year mark. If I continue to lose 6-7 lbs a month that goal is obtainable. Good luck with your decision!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
