Surgery is in a week and I want to know what to expect for pain ? After surgery

everyone and I mean EVERYONE seems to have a different experience!

I had pain immediately after surgery in the recovery room, but it went away quickly. I was sore and sleepy and a bit nauseous for the next several days. Some people on here have no pain whatsoever, some are in a lot of pain for a while, and everything in between.

I will say this though: when you first wake up from surgery, make sure the nurses know if you are in pain because they are there to help IF it does hurt (and it totally might NOT!). The other key thing immediately after surgery is to walk, walk, walk. A lot of times the pain people experience is from the gas the use in laproscopic surgery to inflate your tummy so they have room to work. After surgery, the gas gets trapped in your body tissues and can cause pain & discomfort. Walking helps it dissipate.

Good luck!

I had the most pain when I moved around. I only had a tiny bit of gas pain, After I got home and off the IV pain meds, I was in a bit more pain but after three or four days, the pain was considerably lower and almost gone.

Everyone is different. I know people who never took their pain meds, I took mine religiously until I stopped feeling the pain just before it was time to take more. Then I waited until I started to feel it again before taking anymore.

You will do fine, the first week is hell, but so very worth it! :)

No pain, no gain! LOL

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
