Pre-banding I used to drink a lot of juice that I made with my juicer. Since I'm not getting very many veggies in (focusing on protein!), would it be a good idea to make some juice? I know I'd have to limit it to a much smaller amount than before. My juicer takes out ALL the pulp.

Any comments from long time banders?

My opinion is, it would be OK in small doses. Just make sure you count the calories towards your daily total? I'm assuming juice as in apple or fruit juices?

One of the problems with consuming simple carbs like this is that the sudden input of sugar causes an insulin spike and and then it just makes you want more an hour later.

If you're consuming veggie juice that is a different story, however, liquids are a slider food and will not help your band work it's magic.

I have a machine capable of making juices...and I do occasionally have one made fresh at the juice bar at my health club...my son buys all the ingrediants and makes a juice every day with my machine....

My problem is this...since being banded, my focus is always on Protein....protein, Protein protein....every restaurant, menu, etc, I'm always focused on it...

I Don't see it it with juicing....tell me a recipe that will give me 35gm as I get with a smoothie and I will be converted because I love the thought of a nutritional home made juice.....as a possible Meal Replacement, it has to have high protein....otherwise my body would waste away....

As far as juice being slider, I don't have that problem because my hunger is under control whether I eat or not...the band is always there, so my hunger is also under control, and the magic is there 24 hrs a day.......and because my hunger / appetite is always checked, I stopped worrying about calories or carbs a long time ago....

I do need to stay away from fatty foods because of my history with clogged arteries and subsequent heart surgery.

I have lost all the excess weight my body has to give up, with very little body fat% left....without protein, bad things would start to happen.

A TRUE starvation mode...not the pseudo one newbies fear all the time....So it is even more important to me now than ever before.

Day before yesterday I went to the local supermarket...apples were on sale for $.98 per pound. I bought about 10lbs of apples, spinach, a couple bags of carrots, a couple pounds of beets, and some cucumbers. Made almost a gallon of fresh juice.

I use "new whey 42g liquid protein" fruit punch flavored shots when I'm not hungry, or just don't feel like "eating" Protein. I'll take about 8-10 oz of juice, mix in half a tube of Protein ( 21 grams ) and have a couple of these throughout the day. I don't juice all the time, but this works well to get in your protein, with the added benefit of the veggies and fruit. Also, there are several brands of all natural juice in my local area now. Naked, Bolthouse Farms and others. Easy and quick for on the go when you don't feel like making fresh....or are traveling.

I primarily do celery, ginger, spinach juice with just 1 small carrot and 1/2 green apple. Sometimes lettuce and a cucumber. I stay away from making juices with a high fruit content or sugar content. And one a day is good for me.

I was thinking about Kale/apple or kale/cucumber/beet. I see what you all mean about the carbs and insulin spike. I have a bug tub of Isopure unflavored that I could add to it for Protein. I just am so focused on protein that I miss veggies. I thought adding a little juice could be a good thing, just a couple times a week. Somehow I feel like I'm going to get scurvy after having such little Vitamin C! lol

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
